The Indiana Fever beat the Portland Fire 90-73 on Wednesday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, but the score isn’t what people are still talking about. What dominated the conversations was Caitlin Clark’s absence and an empty stadium.
Caitlin Clark Scratch, Empty Seats Spark Loud WNBA Reactions
CC was scratched less than two hours before tip-off. Indiana listed her out due to a sore back, a call that didn’t sit well with anyone watching at home or in the building.
Multiple videos shot on phone cameras from inside the stadium caught visible patches of empty seats. It was the emptiest the building has looked since Clark arrived in 2024. The visuals put the franchise and the head coach, Stephanie White, in a tough spot, with many calling them out on X.
X content creator @coachandere6xa framed the night as a referendum on Fever leadership.
“We have witnessed the Caitlin Clark effect . Now witness the Stephanie white effect. It comes with good ticket prices and more space to rest in the stadium than a sofa . We are Caitlin Clark fans way before we are Indiana fever fans!”

X user @LVpolitic went further on the franchise’s broader failure. “Caitlin Clark has played in front of sold out crowds since she was 16 years old. Within 3 years the WNBA and the Fever have completely squandered their golden goose moment. The worst thing is, people predicted this exact thing would happen 2 years ago.”

Owner of Black and White Sports Network, Rhodes Rants kept it short. “Wow… look what the Fever Leadership has done… Lost all trust with Fans… And the fans are speaking!”

The empty seats weren’t a mystery. Clark’s scratch came just 100 minutes before tipoff, which was too late for casual buyers to adjust their plans. And then it was the opponent, Portland Fire, who didn’t help either.
Portland is an expansion franchise playing Indiana for the first time in its existence, which isn’t the kind of draw that fills a Wednesday-night building on its own.
Marketing decisions and front office calls haven’t helped either. The Fever have been promoting their games on X and other platforms while sidelining Clark in their content. That has fed directly into the criticism from the people paying to see her.
Add in the drop in engagement, the dip in hype around the league’s biggest draw, and the franchise’s lack of clarity around Clark’s injuries, and the trust gap is widening fast.
Coach White addressed the Clark situation postgame and insisted that the team had expected the guard to be available. She dismissed any suggestions that Indy would face a fine for not flagging her status earlier.
IndyStar’s Chloe Peterson posted the exchange on X: “In a back-and-forth with @RomeovilleKid, Steph White says they expected Caitlin Clark, even without practicing. To be available tonight. That’s why she wasn’t on the injury report. When asked if she expected the Fever to get fined for not listing her on Tues, she went ‘no, no.'”
ESPN’s Alexa Philippou shared additional context from White’s follow-up, where the head coach explained that missing practice doesn’t automatically land a player on the injury report.
“Not everybody that doesn’t practice or gets a pro day is on the injury report. That happens all the time. And she wasn’t listed on the injury report earlier because we expected her to play.”
White said Clark woke up with stiffness and soreness on Wednesday morning, and the team chose to err on the side of caution. Fieldhouse Files reporter Scott Agness later reported that Clark’s absence is part of a broader “strategic management plan for the season,” suggesting Wednesday’s scratch may not be the last of its kind.
The Fever return to Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Friday to host the Golden State Valkyries at 7:30 p.m. ET.
