‘WNBA Would Be Better Without Caitlin Clark’ — Ex-NFL LB Bluntly Argues Fever Star Is More ‘Distraction’ Than ‘Additive’

Former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho insists that the massive media circus surrounding Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark is harming the WNBA.

Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark continues to divide the American sports landscape. Now, former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho recently dropped the most polarizing take of the season, boldly claiming that the league would actually be better off if its most famous player wasn’t in it.

What Did Emmanuel Acho Say About Caitlin Clark?

Acho appeared on the latest episode of “Speakeasy” and forwarded an argument that Clark had already served her purpose, and the surrounding discourse has now become a net negative for the sport.

“The WNBA, at this junction and time, would be better without Caitlin Clark because she is a bigger distraction than she is an additive,” Acho argued. “Caitlin Clark has gotten the WNBA over the necessary threshold they needed. Now, people are watching, now we realize, ‘Oh there is talent in the WNBA. The talent that actually is even greater than Caitlin Clark.'”

For Acho, the historic influx of attention was a means to an end, leading to a blunt dismissal of her ongoing value to the league. “Caitlin got the necessary eyes there,” Acho continued.

“But now that the eyes are there, we don’t necessarily need you anymore. Caitlin did what only Caitlin could do and we don’t necessarily need her to do anymore. Thank you Caitlin, we can take it from here.”

Acho expressed immense frustration with the perceived double standards and special treatment demanded by Clark’s passionate fanbase and media defenders. He detailed how the league’s infrastructure is being pressured to bend to her presence.

“Now you are saying that WNBA needs to be cognizant of where they put Caitlin Clark on posters,” Acho said. “The WNBA and the officials need to alter the rules for Caitlin Clark. “The WNBA and opposing players need to treat Caitlin Clark more gently. Caitlin Clark’s coach needs to be more cognizant of how she talks to her in the public because it’s gonna look like there is an issue.”

Ultimately, Acho delivered an ultimatum on how the sport must handle the phenomenon moving forward: “Unless we can take off our gloves for Caitlin Clark and stop trying to act like she is a messiah, the WNBA could and would be better off without Caitlin Clark, at least without this version of everybody coddling and caressing and catering to Caitlin Clark.”

While Acho views the surrounding noise as a distraction, the hard economic and viewership metrics present a staggering counter-argument. To claim the league could effortlessly move on from her ignores an ongoing historic boom that the WNBA has never seen in its three-decade existence.

TV-viewership that hovered around 450k viewership has consistently been shattering 2 million-plus viewers per game. In addition, the WNBA teams have been moving the games to NBA arenas due to increased attention.

Fever coach Stephanie White has stood firmly behind her player after an uncalled hit by Alyssa Thomas. White called the aggressive non-calls “absolutely egregious and utterly disrespectful,” arguing that advocating for a player’s physical safety is standard officiating, not special treatment.

WNBA legend Lisa Leslie weighed in on the Thomas incident, agreeing the suspension was warranted and calling on officials and players alike to “do better” and “clean it up.”

Ultimately, while the nonstop media circus can feel exhausting to traditionalists, the claim that the WNBA would be better off without Clark ignores reality.
