Another year of the NFL, another year of misery for New York Giants fans. Despite showing flashes of improvement, the team has a 3-13 record heading into the final week of the season, finishing as one of the worst teams in the NFL.
The team decided to cut ties with head coach Brian Daboll in the middle of the season, and it seemed like general manager Joe Schoen would be next. However, Schoen is still around, and an insider reveals his safety moving forward to the offseason.
Joe Schoen and His Future with the New York Giants
Schoen has been with the Giants since the 2022 season after spending the previous five seasons with the Buffalo Bills as their assistant general manager. In his first season with the team, the Giants made the playoffs with a record of 9-7-1. Things were looking up for the Giants, but over the four years, he has a record of 21-45-1.
First was Daboll to be fired, and it seemed that Schoen would follow suit. However, it now appears that this may not be true. Jordan Raanan, a writer for the Giants with ESPN, said the following regarding Schoen:
“The search is being led by general manager Joe Schoen,” Raanan wrote. “Ownership tasked him with this responsibility after firing Daboll. Multiple sources who spoke with the Giants about potential candidates came away from recent conversations believing that Schoen ‘is coming back’ as the general manager despite a 6-27 record over the past two seasons.”
“That is barring any last-minute change of mind by ownership or a high-level candidate who demands his own general manager,” Raanan added.

Based on this, it sounds like Schoen will be back next season to the dismay of many Giants fans. It wouldn’t make sense for him to lead the coaching search if he were to be fired; this would be in the hands of ownership or the new general manager. Even though Schoen appears to be sticking around, that doesn’t mean he’s entirely safe, and it’s easy to imagine him remaining on the hot seat next season.
Despite the lack of success, Schoen has made good moves during his time with the Giants. For example, he extended the contracts of offensive tackle Andrew Thomas and defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence to long-term deals.
He has also drafted several impact players, such as Kayvon Thibodeaux, Wan’Dale Robinson, Malik Nabers, Abdul Carter, Jaxson Dart, and Cam Skattebo. Schoen also acquired Brian Burns in a trade and signed Jevon Holland in free agency.
According to PFSN’s QB Impact Metric, Dart is the 24th-ranked quarterback in the league this season. He is viewed by many as the future of the franchise and will give the Giants the luxury of trading down in the draft to build their roster effectively.
However, one of the biggest disappointments of his tenure was the handling of Saquon Barkley’s contract negotiations, which ultimately led to the team losing the star player to the division rival Philadelphia Eagles.
