Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Clears the Air About DC Matt Eberflus

On Sunday, the Cowboys’ defense gave up 34 points and 423 yards to the Vikings, who had a below-average offense. For the fourth straight week, the defense allowed over 400 yards. Watching his team struggle on national TV, Jones voiced his concerns after the game.

“The adjustments that we should be making should be with these next three games in mind,” Jones said, as reported by Cowboys insider Bobby Belt. “With three games left in the short time that we’ve got to play them in, then that will impact any adjustments that you make regarding coaching with the time frame we’re dealing with. That’s a legit question.”

The Sporting News reports the Cowboys have a 1% playoff chance. Dallas must win all remaining games and get significant outside help to reach the postseason.

Eberflus, the former Chicago Bears head coach, arrived in Dallas aiming to shift the defense’s focus, which previously centered around pass rusher Micah Parsons. In the summer, Jones traded Parsons to Green Bay, altering the defensive approach.

Without Parsons as the centerpiece–a role that had made coverage easier for the secondary–the Cowboys reoriented their defense around the interior after acquiring defensive tackle Kenny Clark and, via a trade with the New York Jets, standout tackle Quinnen Williams.

This transition moved the emphasis from edge pressure to a line-centered strategy designed to generate more interior disruption and allow edge rushers to play cleanup roles.

Before his injury, Parsons produced 12.5 sacks. Since his departure and the adjustment to a line-focused defense, the Cowboys’ sack production has dropped; the team totaled only 28, with edge rusher James Houston leading with 5.5.

The defensive unit, struggling to adapt to new roles after the schematic shift and without Parsons, saw diminished results. The secondary, previously a strength with Parsons helping to pressure quarterbacks, now struggles against the pass, allowing 31 receiving touchdowns.

According to PFSN’s Defense Impact metric, the defense ranks 31st in the league in efficiency, effectiveness, and total production. Can the Cowboys accomplish enough in the eyes of their owner to prevent their coordinator’s removal?
