The Kansas City Chiefs are counting on Kareem Hunt for their Week 8 matchup against the Washington Commanders on Monday Night Football. However, his participation was in serious doubt after an injury emerged that could sideline the veteran running back.
What Is the Injury Status of Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt?
Head coach Andy Reid revealed that Hunt did not practice on Thursday due to a bone bruise in his knee. According to Nate Taylor of The Athletic, Reid tried to reassure fans by noting the injury is not considered serious, leaving the possibility that Hunt could be active for Monday’s game.
While the coach’s comments offer some optimism, a bone bruise can significantly compromise a running back’s ability to run with power, make sharp cuts, and accelerate. There is a legitimate concern that even if Hunt plays, he won’t be able to perform at his best. Hunt is one of the most critical players in the Chiefs’ ground attack, so his health is a major factor.
Additionally, the fact that the running back, whom the team calls “Hunter,” missed Thursday’s practice significantly shortens his recovery time before the Monday night kickoff. For the Chiefs and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, this uncertainty directly impacts the offensive game plan and how carries will be distributed. The timing is particularly tough given Hunt’s consistent performance throughout the 2025-26 campaign.
Fortunately for the Chiefs, Hunt was taken off the injury report on Saturday, and he will play on Monday against the Commanders.
So far this season, the running back has delivered a strong performance, contributing on short-yardage runs and in red zone situations. He has also established good chemistry with Isiah Pacheco, helping the offense maintain rhythm and variety in its ground game.
If Hunt is somehow not effective on Monday, Pacheco is expected to take on the majority of carries and offensive snaps. This would establish him as the primary ground option and force Brashard Smith into a more prominent role, likely on short passing plays as a secondary running back. Meanwhile, Elijah Mitchell emerges as another option if the Chiefs go deeper into their running back rotation against the Commanders, who currently rank 15th in the PFN Defense Impact metric with a 74.1 DEFi.
Hunt is a valuable asset who runs well, reads his blocks effectively, and provides security as a checkdown receiver for Patrick Mahomes. His presence gives the star quarterback more time to move around in the pocket. Without him, the Chiefs will likely reduce their use of “11 personnel” formations, as Pacheco and Smith do not offer the same reliability in the passing game or in protection.
Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice are also expected to be used more frequently on short and medium routes to replace some of Hunt’s production. Ultimately, the running back’s absence could affect Mahomes’ rhythm on key drives, as Hunt is a safe and reliable option in crucial third-and-short situations.
