Vita Vea has spent his entire NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but his ninth season with the franchise has begun with an uncertain future.
The two-time Pro Bowler requested a trade after negotiations over a long-term contract extension stalled. With Vea entering the final year of his current deal, the disagreement has created one of the Buccaneers’ biggest storylines entering the 2026 season.
Why Did Vita Vea Request a Trade?
The dispute largely comes down to money and long-term security.
Vea signed a four-year, $71 million extension with Tampa Bay in January 2022. That contract carries an average annual value of $17.75 million, but he is entering its final season and is scheduled to make a $17 million base salary in 2026. According to ESPN, none of that base salary is guaranteed.
The market for interior defensive linemen has changed significantly since Vea signed his extension. Spotrac noted that his $17.75 million average annual salary currently ranks 22nd among interior defenders as extension talks dragged into the summer.
That gap helps explain why Vea was looking for another long-term commitment rather than simply playing out the final year of his deal and reaching free agency in 2027.

His request became public on July 27 after NFL Network Insiders Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport reported that attempts to negotiate an extension had failed. The situation has not improved enough for Vea’s representatives to back away from the request.
Vea’s agent, Collin Roberts, later told the Tampa Bay Times that he did not see the contract standoff ending in anything other than a trade.
That is a much stronger position than simply using a trade request as leverage. Vea’s camp appears to be seeking either the long-term financial commitment it believes he deserves or an opportunity to find it elsewhere.
Is Vita Vea Actually Holding Out?
Vea has not staged a traditional holdout by staying away from the Buccaneers.
Instead, ESPN has classified his situation as a hold-in. He has been around the organization, attended meetings, and observed practices without physically participating. The Buccaneers have also said Vea suffered a minor back injury during the team’s conditioning test at the beginning of camp.
Head coach Todd Bowles said Vea has remained engaged despite the uncertainty, while general manager Jason Licht has publicly pushed back against the possibility of moving one of Tampa Bay’s defensive cornerstones.

“I have no plans on trading Vita,” Licht said.
The Buccaneers’ official update also noted that the team has remained in contact with Roberts in hopes of finding a resolution.
Vea’s importance explains Tampa Bay’s reluctance. He started all 17 games in 2025, recorded 4.5 sacks and 34 tackles, and played a career-high 73% of the Buccaneers’ defensive snaps.

What Happens Next for Vea and Buccaneers?
For now, neither side appears ready to give the other what it wants.
Tampa Bay wants Vea back in the middle of its defense and has publicly said a trade is not part of its plans. Vea’s representatives, meanwhile, have made it clear that the current contract situation is not satisfactory.
A trade would immediately create interest around the league. PFN previously identified several potential landing spots, including the Las Vegas Raiders and San Francisco 49ers.
The Buccaneers would also be giving up one of the remaining pillars of their Super Bowl LV championship defense. That makes a resolution in Tampa Bay the easiest outcome from the team’s perspective.
Whether Vea feels the same way likely depends on one thing: if the Buccaneers are willing to close the financial gap that led him to request a trade in the first place.
