The Seattle Seahawks are one win away from securing their second Vince Lombardi Trophy since 2014. However, rather than legendary head coach Pete Carroll leading the way, it will be second-year coach Mike McDaniel. Here is a closer look at why the Seahawks parted ways with Carroll and where he is now.
Why Did the Seattle Seahawks Fire Pete Carroll?
On Jan. 10, 2023, only days after that season’s regular finale, NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that Pete Carroll would be out as the Seattle Seahawks head coach. The move, shocking at the time, marked the end of a 14-year tenure.
The decision surprised many fans, as Carroll had enjoyed consistent success in Seattle. His résumé includes a 137-89-1 regular-season record and a 10-8 postseason record. Most notably, under Carroll, Seattle reached the playoffs 10 times and appeared in two Super Bowls, winning one in 2013-14.
After failing to claim another Lombardi Trophy over the next decade, Seattle decided it was time to move on. According to ESPN Seahawks reporter Brady Henderson, team owner Jody Allen said the decision came “after thoughtful meetings and careful consideration for the best interest of the franchise.”

Henderson added that Carroll said he “competed pretty hard” to remain head coach but understood Seattle’s “intentions” and its decision to move in a different direction.
Henderson also shared one final quote from Carroll: “It’s been an honor and a thrill to be part of this program, and I’ve loved every minute of it. You’ve watched me love it.”
Is Carroll Currently Coaching in the NFL?
In January 2025, after taking a season off from coaching, Schefter announced that Carroll and the Las Vegas Raiders had agreed to a three-year contract to make him their next head coach.

The Super Bowl-winning coach lasted only one season. The Raiders finished with an NFL-worst 3-14 record. Their offense ranked No. 31, according to PFSN’s Offense Impact Metric, while the defense ranked No. 21.
Although Carroll has not stated whether he intends to coach in 2026, he has yet to receive a head-coaching interview this offseason. At 74, the odds suggest his coaching career may be nearing its end.
Regardless of his time with the Raiders and what may come next, Carroll is widely regarded as a future Hall of Fame coach and will always be remembered as a Seahawks legend.
