Demarcus Robinson signed with the San Francisco 49ers earlier this offseason under the veil of an impending suspension. The nine-year veteran has made the playoffs each year of his career, but he will have to wait to begin his 10th season after he was reportedly handed a three-game ban.
49ers WR Demarcus Robinson To Serve 3-Game Suspension in 2025
Robinson was a fourth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft and spent the first six years of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs. He made the Chiefs’ 53-man roster out of training camp, but didn’t record any statistics as he mostly played special teams as a rookie.
He was more involved in Kansas City’s offense in year two, posting 21 catches for 212 yards. His numbers improved each of the next three years with the Chiefs, but Robinson was always a complementary option to Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill. He played during the team’s Super Bowl 54 victory, but did not record a catch.
That year, he totaled 32 catches, 449 yards, and four touchdowns. Robinson re-signed the following year and had his best season as a Chief. He posted 45 receptions, 466 yards, and three more scores in 2020. He signed another one-year contract in 2021 before joining the Las Vegas Raiders for training camp in 2022.
The Raiders cut Robinson mid-way through training camp, and he landed with the Baltimore Ravens. He made the playoffs yet again with the Ravens after totaling 48 receptions, 458 yards, and two scores in the regular season.
After one year with Baltimore, Robinson spent the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Rams. 2024 was the best year of his career. The veteran posted 31 catches and set career highs in yards (505) and touchdowns (7). He contributed during Los Angeles’s playoff run, but fell into legal trouble.
In late November, Robinson was arrested for driving over 100 miles per hour with “objective signs and symptoms of alcohol impairment”. The team did not suspend Robinson, but he was just handed a three-game ban for his second violation of the league’s substance abuse policy.
Robinson was arrested in early January for a misdemeanor DUI in Los Angeles. This was his second such incident while with the Rams, and the team did not re-sign the receiver. He agreed to a two-year, $8 million contract with San Francisco, and 49ers reporter Matt Maiocco reported the suspension.
Maiocco wrote an article shortly after his signing detailing what a suspension could look like. He wrote, “Robinson could be in violation of the NFL’s policy and program on substances of abuse after he was charged with one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of alcohol stemming from his arrest in November.”
He noted, “Discipline for a first DUI offense is suspension without pay for three games. Discipline for a second or subsequent offense is eight games.” Robinson’s first offense was not a DUI, so he was slapped with just a three-game ban.
This isn’t the best way to start your career with a new team, but Robinson’s knack for making the playoffs could lead the 49ers to tolerate the suspension.
