The Divisional Round of the playoffs has concluded, and Mike Tomlin is touted as a candidate for the Buffalo Bills’ head coaching job after the team fired Sean McDermott following a long run of missing the Super Bowl with a strong squad. Tomlin will bring nearly 30 years of NFL experience to the role.
But what are his chances of landing the job?
NFL Insider Jay Glazer Rules Out Mike Tomlin As Sean McDermott’s Bills Successor
Seven NFL teams already reportedly called insider Jay Glazer to check on Tomlin’s coaching availability for 2026. Glazer is a close media friend of the former Pittsburgh Steelers coach, being well-known for his inside work on the team — like predicting that it wouldn’t retain Russell Wilson or Justin Fields last season.
Amid speculation about where the accomplished coach could land for the 2026 campaign, Glazer poured cold water on the hype on “Wake Up Barstool.”
“And I know people also say, ‘Could Tomlin also come out?’ That’s not happening,” Glazer said. “Mike T’s done.”
The number of teams that called with interest in the coach underscores his strong reputation in the league. He spent 19 years with the Steelers, building one of the most impressive records in recent memory: 193-114-2.
“Everybody has called about Mike Tomlin,” Glazer added. “I probably had seven teams call me to see if Mike T would think about coming back out and coaching again. I’m like, ‘No, not happening.’ And then I got, I think I had all seven teams coming back again, saying, ‘Hey, has he changed his mind?’ No, he definitely hasn’t changed his mind. That’s definitely not happening.”
The Bills’ head coaching job is highly sought after due to the team’s strong roster. It starts with franchise quarterback Josh Allen at the top. He went 12-5 as a starter this season, throwing for 3,668 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
His legs further make him one of the most dangerous dual-threat quarterbacks in the NFL, as he rushed for 579 yards on 112 carries this campaign. He also led all the Bills’ running backs in rushing touchdowns with 14.
Buffalo’s roster is stacked with talent on both sides of the ball. James Cook anchors the backfield, while Allen has a deep cast of receivers, including Khalil Shakir and Dalton Kincaid, as well as veterans Brandin Cooks and Gabe Davis.
On defense, the Bills compiled a solid unit that included Joey Bosa, Tre’Davious White, and Gregory Rousseau.
The keys to the kingdom are up for grabs, and it’ll be interesting to see who gets assigned to the driver’s seat for the 2026 season.
