The New England Patriots have been steadily building themselves up as a force to be reckoned with in the AFC. A 7-2 start has them near the top of the conference, while they continue to notch wins. But their success has come despite the running back room being a major question mark throughout the year.
This week, it seemed like things were changing, as reports suggested head coach Mike Vrabel was ready to give a larger workload to rookie TreVeyon Henderson. However, come kick-off time, fans were in for a major surprise when Terrell Jennings got the starting nod.
What Happened to TreVeyon Henderson?
Rather than their second-round pick finally getting a major gig, after toiling behind Rhamondre Stevenson for the first nine weeks, it was Jennings who Vrabel chose to trust over him.
Previously on the practice squad, it was a shocking decision by the veteran head coach. However, it continues to fuel the idea that the rookie is either not ready to handle a huge responsibility in the offense or has fallen out of favor with his head coach.
Either way, the situation got more complicated after the Patriots suffered a blow to Jennings. Thanks to an injury to his knee, he was being checked out on the sideline and was trying to run to regain some feeling.
It was unclear how serious his injury was. But if it does turn out to be a major blow, then the options for New England will quickly evaporate, leaving Henderson as the last real choice for the offense to go to. According to PFSN’s Offense Impact metric, the Patriots have the eighth-ranked offense in the league.
Jennings is currently questionable to return to the game against the Buccaneers.
