What Happened to Saquon Barkley? Breaking Down the Eagles Star’s Injury After He Exited Week 8 vs. Giants

The Philadelphia Eagles faced off against the New York Giants in Week 8 for an NFC East showdown. They’ve ridden the back of running back Saquon Barkley for most of the day; however, after a long run in the fourth quarter, he came up limping. Here’s everything we know about the Eagles’ star running back.

What Happened to Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley?

Barkley was having a monster day, turning 14 carries into 150 yards and a touchdown, along with four receptions for 24 yards and another score. Despite the strong offensive day for Philadelphia, most of the production has come from Barkley.

That’s why the Eagles and fans across the league were concerned when he came up limping after a big run in the fourth quarter, causing the first-team All-Pro running back to go to the blue medical tent. The team said he suffered a hamstring injury, but hasn’t provided many details outside of that.

After an underwhelming start to 2025, Barkley was in the midst of his best game of the season, lighting up the Giants on the ground and through the air. He had not had a game where he had 100 yards rushing this season, cruising past that mark easily against New York in Week 8.

Heading into Week 8, Barkley was ranked 31st among running backs in the league based on PFSN’s RB Impact metric.

MORE: Eagles Owner Sets Record Straight on A.J. Brown’s Future Amid WR’s Trade Rumors

One of the biggest questions for the Eagles from a fantasy perspective was what would happen if Barkley had to miss time. Entering the year, Will Shipley was the presumptive handcuff, but we weren’t that sure. It’s why Shipley fell so late in drafts. He was a speculative handcuff, at best.

A.J. Dillon assumed the backup RB role while Shipley missed time. But now, it appears as if Tank Bigsby has usurped him for the RB2 role. The real answer is that it will be an ugly committee with the Eagles going more pass-heavy.

For what it’s worth, Barkley looks okay. But if he doesn’t return to this game, fantasy managers will need to consider adding Bigsby and Shipley ahead of Week 9.

After setting a blistering pace in 2024, Barkley returned to earth in 2025, rushing for 369 yards and three touchdowns on 113 carries through seven weeks in 2025. He’s also caught 20 of his 23 targets for 135 yards and a touchdown. It will be interesting to see how severe the injury is and if Barkley will be forced to miss any significant amount of time.
