The Detroit Lions enter Week 11 preparing for one of their toughest tests of the season, a Sunday Night Football showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles, but they will do so without one of their most important offensive weapons. Tight end Sam LaPorta, who has been a cornerstone in Detroit’s passing game all season, has been ruled out for the primetime matchup. His absence affects the Lions’ offensive structure and their expected target distribution.
Why Is Sam LaPorta Out for Sunday Night Football?
Sam LaPorta unexpectedly appeared on the Detroit Lions’ injury report with a back issue midweek. He did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday, two consecutive DNPs that raised red flags about his availability. Detroit often manages minor injuries by resting players early in the week, but back-to-back absences for the heavily used tight end suggested the issue was more than routine maintenance.
By Friday afternoon, those concerns were confirmed. The Lions officially ruled LaPorta out for Week 11, according to reports from team-linked outlets and ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
“Lions TE Sam LaPorta is listed as out for Sunday night vs. the Eagles due to his back injury,” Schefter tweeted on Friday.
What remains unknown is when the back injury occurred. LaPorta showed no visible limitations during Detroit’s 44-22 win over the Washington Commanders in Week 10, and he did not display signs of discomfort post-game. Nevertheless, the pain persisted throughout the week, prompting Detroit to sideline him to avoid aggravating the issue.
Through nine games, he has caught 40 of 49 targets for 489 yards and three touchdowns, averaging a career-best 54.3 receiving yards per game. He ranks fourth in PFSN’s TE Impact metric with an 86.9 score and a B grade.
With the Lions having a 6-3 record and maintaining playoff aspirations, losing a cornerstone player is a notable hit.

The team deepened its tight end depth by signing veteran Anthony Firkser to the practice squad, adding to a room already dealing with Brock Wright’s ankle issue. Wright, who was limited in practice, is expected to draw the start, with Ross Dwelley also factoring into the rotation. Practice squad options like Firkser and Zach Horton are candidates for elevation on game day.
Without LaPorta, the Lions’ target distribution is expected to shift. Amon-Ra St. Brown should absorb most of the share, with Jameson Williams, running back Jahmyr Gibbs following him. Isaac TeSlaa, Kalif Raymond, and Wright might fill in the remaining gaps.
