What Happened to Rashee Rice? A Look at the Chiefs Star’s NFL Suspension, When He’ll Return

As the next weekend of NFL games loom, PFSN provides an update on the status of Kansas CIty Chiefs WR Rashee Rice's suspension.

As many NFL fans know, WR Rashee Rice is not currently playing for the Kansas City Chiefs due to violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy.

Rice is serving a six-game suspension to start his 2025 season. The suspension also prohibits him from practicing with the Chiefs and will be served without pay. Rice will be eligible for reinstatement on October 13, following the Chiefs’ game against the Detroit Lions.

A More In Depth Look at Rashee Rice’s Suspension

Rice was sentenced to 30 days in jail and five years’ probation for his role in a multi-car crash in Dallas that left multiple people injured during the 2024 offseason.

The wide receiver pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony charges of collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. The judge will allow Rice, who is paying roughly $115,000 in total to victims for their medical expenses, to choose the time or times he serves out his sentence.

According to NBC DFW, Rice was driving a 2020 Lamborghini Urus SUV during rush hour on Central Expressway on March 30, 2024. The Kansas City star was driving 119 miles per hour just 4.5 seconds before the first impact and injured at least four people before fleeing the scene on foot.

“Last March, I was involved in a high-speed accident in Dallas. There have been a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages that my actions caused, and I will continue working within my means to make sure that everyone impacted will be made whole,” Rice said of the incident through his attorney.

“I urge everyone to mind the speed limit, drive safe, and drive smart,” he continued. “Last and certainly not least, I am profoundly sorry for the physical damages to person and property. I fully apologize for the harm I caused to innocent drivers and their families.”

ESPN reported he made “multiple aggressive maneuvers around traffic” and struck other vehicles.

Rice has missed the Chiefs’ Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Week 2 game versus the Philadelphia Eagles, and will also miss playing against the New York Giants, Baltimore Ravens, Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Detroit Lions.

The first game he will be eligible to play is in Week 7 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Rice was drafted as the No. 55 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft by the Chiefs. He has tallied 1,226 receiving yards and nine touchdowns across 103 receptions throughout his two years in the league. His rookie season greatly helped the Chiefs to their Super Bowl win as he led the team’s receivers with 79 receptions, 938 yards, and seven touchdowns.

Rice also fully participated in this season’s training camp and played in two preseason games for Kansas City as he awaited his penalty from the NFL.

Rice’s Fantasy Outlook

PFSN’s Kyle Soppe wrote this about Rice’s fantasy outlook for the 2025 NFL season:

Rice has been suspended for the first six weeks of this season for a violation of the NFL’s personal conduct policy, and with a Week 10 bye, you’re looking at a fantasy star that needs to hit the ground running in a month when you get him back.

Rice showed well physically in camp, and when he’s back on the active roster, there’s no conversation to be had. Over his past 13 healthy games, his 17-game pace was 110 catches and eight scores, a line that makes him an unquestioned asset in all formats.

With Travis Kelce at the mercy of Father Time and Xavier Worthy’s role only set to regress, Rice is the pass catcher to trust in this offense when at full strength, and it’s not close in my opinion.

If you roster Rice, you have the opportunity to play him every week. Survive in the short term and thrive in the long term. I’m told this is what parenting is like, but I cannot confirm.

If you don’t, I’d suggest actively rooting against the team that does. Not that “rooting” does you any good, but you will want to keep tabs on that team: if that team stubs its toe out of the gates and doesn’t feel as if it can survive the entirety of this suspension, you might be able to buy low on a potential league winner:
