What Happened to Patrick Mahomes? Breaking Down Why Gardner Minshew II Is Playing for Chiefs in Week 7 vs. Raiders

Going against the Las Vegas Raiders, why did the Kansas City Chiefs opted to switch Patrick Mahomes with Gardner Minshew II before the 4th?

Beware, rest of the NFL. The Kansas City Chiefs might be officially back. Starting the season 0-2 for the first time since Patrick Mahomes took over as their starting quarterback, it seemed like the sky was falling for one of the greatest dynasties in the sport’s history. In the five weeks since, the team has rallied back in a major way to cement themselves as the cream of the crop franchise in the league once again.

After going 3-1 since then, with victories over the likes of the Baltimore Ravens and the Detroit Lions, Kansas City had a divisional game against the Las Vegas Raiders to get through. But after three quarters, it was clear that the team was back to being their most dominant selves. Unfortunately, before the final period could get underway, the team chose to send out Gardner Minshew to be the man under center. That left one question on everyone’s mind.

What Happened to Patrick Mahomes?

Undeniably the greatest quarterback of this generation, Mahomes had a rough go over the last two seasons, with the offense for the Chiefs looking underwhelming for the most part. After a humiliating loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59, change was necessary.

Unfortunately, that change didn’t arrive until midway through the game against the New York Giants. Seemingly flipping a switch, the team found its mojo back, particularly on the offensive end.

Since then, the returning Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice have given them additional boosts. The game against the Raiders, which marked the latter’s return after over a year away from the field, turned out to be one of the best performances from Kansas City in recent memory.

Going up 31-0 before the third quarter was over, head coach Andy Reid decided to trot out the second unit, giving most of his starters extended rest with the game seemingly out of the Raiders’ reach.

Mahomes was one such player who earned some well-deserved time on the sideline, with Minshew taking over as the quarterback. On the night, which had seemingly come to an end for him, the two-time MVP finished with 286 yards and three touchdowns.

Completing 26 of 35 passing attempts, he had a passer rating of 126.6, while rushing for 28 yards on four carries as well. After re-entering the MVP discussion following a scintillating performance against Detroit, this game may have given more fuel to that fire.
