The Kansas City Chiefs are finding their rhythm again after a sluggish start and now face a pivotal AFC showdown against the Buffalo Bills in Week 9. Unfortunately, they’ll be without a key offensive weapon, as running back Isiah Pacheco has been ruled out for Sunday’s matchup.
So what happened to Pacheco, and when can Kansas City expect him back in the lineup? Here’s what we know.
Why Is Isiah Pacheco Out for Week 9?
Pacheco had been healthy throughout the 2025 season until he took a hit to the knee on a fourth-quarter carry during Monday night’s 28–7 win over the Washington Commanders. He immediately limped to the sideline for evaluation and did not return. While he was able to walk off under his own power, further testing on Tuesday revealed a sprained MCL.
The Chiefs have listed Pacheco as “week-to-week,” which typically signals a multi-week recovery rather than a short-term issue. MCL sprains usually fall within a 4–6 week recovery window, depending on the severity. A mild Grade 1 sprain could see him back in roughly two weeks, but more moderate damage tends to require the full timetable.
Kansas City’s Week 10 bye offers valuable recovery time, giving Pacheco a slim chance of returning in Week 11. However, based on standard timelines and the Chiefs’ historically cautious approach with key contributors, it’s more realistic that his absence lasts a bit longer.
The franchise has shown patience with injuries, especially given their depth and championship expectations. Rushing a running back back from an MCL sprain risks aggravation and potential postseason complications.
Before the injury, Pacheco had begun to hit his stride. Through eight games, he totaled 329 rushing yards and a touchdown, along with 43 receiving yards and another score, ranking 33rd in PFSN’s RB Impact metric. He had also posted at least 12 carries and 50 rushing yards in each of his last three outings after a quiet start to the year.
In his absence, veteran Kareem Hunt is expected to handle the majority of carries. Hunt currently ranks 18th among running backs in the RB Impact metric, with 245 rushing yards and four touchdowns so far.
The good news for Pacheco and the Chiefs is that the injury was not a tear, which often ends a player’s season. The sprain means he is expected to make a full return in the coming weeks. Kansas City has also chosen not to place him on the injured reserve list, which further suggests this is likely a short-term absence.
