The 2025 campaign for the Los Angeles Rams has been a resounding success. This team is currently 9-3, sits atop the NFC West, and holds the second seed in the NFC playoff picture.

While the backfield is now split between Kyren Williams and Blake Corum, Los Angeles is only a few years removed from running back Cam Akers. Here is a look at what happened to Akers and what the running back is currently up to.

What Happened to Cam Akers?

Akers was drafted out of Florida State with the 52nd overall pick in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Rams. In college, he finished with 3,360 scrimmage yards and 34 touchdowns in three years.

In his rookie season, Akers rushed for 625 yards and two touchdowns on 145 attempts, also catching 11 receptions for 123 yards and one touchdown. In PFSN’s RBi, he finished with an impact score of 64.7, a letter grade of D, and a season rank of 47.

However, the following offseason, Akers tore his Achilles while training and missed 16 games the following season. He ended up playing in only one regular-season game, in addition to four playoff contests.

Akers played the 2022 season, but it essentially became his last in Los Angeles, as he was traded to the Minnesota Vikings the following year. The relationship between him and the team deteriorated, and it was time for both sides to seek new opportunities. Akers played six games with Minnesota before suffering a season-ending Achilles tear.

Coming off two Achilles injuries, it was hard for Akers to play as he did earlier in his career. Despite only being in his mid-20s, his body had sustained a lot of significant injuries.

But he came back again, playing 17 games across two teams: the Houston Texans and the Vikings, once again. Between the two squads, Akers rushed 104 times for 444 yards and two touchdowns, also catching 14 receptions for 68 yards and three touchdowns.

This season, he played only three games with Minnesota before being cut from their practice squad. He ran five times for 19 yards, and that was about it. However, he was signed by the Seattle Seahawks about a week ago and is the third-string running back behind Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet.

For the rest of his career, it appears that Akers is destined to be a third-string, maybe second-string running back. With his significant injuries, it is unlikely he will ever get another chance to start and will likely act as a depth piece.
