What Happened to Deebo Samuel Sr.? Breaking Down the Commanders Star’s Recent Injury Issues

Deebo Samuel Sr. has battled a nagging heel injury in recent weeks. Here’s a full breakdown of his injury and whether he will return tonight against the Chiefs.

The Washington Commanders’ season has gone from bad to worse after quarterback Jayden Daniels suffered his second injury of the year. With Marcus Mariota now stepping in under center, the Commanders need all the offensive help they can get, and fortunately, they’re set to welcome back one of their key playmakers: Deebo Samuel Sr.

Samuel was sidelined in the Cowboys’ Week 7 loss due to a heel injury, but after a full week of practice, he’s expected to return for Monday Night Football. So, let’s take a closer look at what happened with Samuel’s injury.

What Was Deebo Samuel Sr.’s Injury?

Samuel had been dealing with a bruised heel for several weeks, an issue that caused recurring concerns for Washington’s offense. The injury first surfaced before Week 5, when he missed the Commanders’ initial practice sessions before ultimately suiting up and performing well against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Despite the discomfort, Samuel pushed through the pain for two straight games. He was a true game-time decision against the Chicago Bears after missing multiple weekly practice sessions. While he ultimately played, he was clearly compromised with just four catches on five targets for 15 yards.

His condition eventually forced him to sit out Week 7 against the Dallas Cowboys, marking his first missed game. Fortunately, a week of rest appears to have done the trick. Samuel was a full participant in practice all week leading up to Monday night’s matchup and is expected to return to action.

The heel bruise was described as a pain-tolerance issue rather than a structural injury, meaning complete rest was necessary for recovery. With the added time off, Samuel is optimistic that the problem is now behind him and is eager to get his first win against the Chiefs.

“We definitely have a challenge on our hands with, you know, Patty Mahomes back there,” Samuel said. “They’re riding the high horse right now. They won three of their last four games, and Monday Night Football, like you said, the atmosphere is going to be crazy. I think I’ve played the Chiefs probably like four times. I think I’m like 0-4 right now. So, let’s see — can we turn this around for sure?”

So far in the 2025 season, Samuel has added 34 catches for 315 yards and three receiving touchdowns, but has yet to record his first 100-yard receiving game of the campaign. The veteran receiver ranks 21st in PFSN’s WR Impact Index with a B- grade.
