What Happened Between Tyreek Hill and Tua Tagovailoa? A Look at the Tension Since the WR’s Meltdown

A deteriorating relationship between WR Tyreek Hill and QB Tua Tagovailoa could be more than enough for the Miami Dolphins to start 0-3.

Despite demanding a trade, wide receiver Tyreek Hill appears to be staying in Miami, at least for now. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that, at this point, no teams have called the Miami Dolphins about their veteran wideout. This comes as his relationship with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has rapidly deteriorated, although the receiver is reportedly trying to repair it. With team morale at an all-time low, the 0-2 Dolphins must find answers quickly.

Why Are Tua Tagovailoa and Tyreek Hill Struggling to Connect?

Hill has not had the easiest time adjusting to his quarterback. Despite being with the Dolphins for four years, the former Kansas City Chiefs receiver seems to miss his old quarterback. The transition from Patrick Mahomes to Tagovailoa is a significant change, especially considering the 27-year-old quarterback’s injury history. Tagovailoa has dealt with a series of concussions and injuries that have forced him to miss numerous games throughout his career.

The 2023 season was the only time Tagovailoa has managed to play 17 games. Unsurprisingly, that was by far the best year of his career. The Alabama graduate threw for 4,624 yards with 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. In that same season, Hill achieved a career-high 119 receptions and 1,799 receiving yards.

Since then, things have gone downhill for the Dolphins. Dolphins once positioned itself as one of the most interesting teams in the league, but now it seems to have fallen off a cliff. Hill had no issue calling out Tagovailoa, which was one of many instances showing distrust between the two. If a team’s quarterback doesn’t trust his star wide receiver, it’s hard to see how anything will get accomplished.

Hill complimented his quarterback despite falling to the New England Patriots, 33-27. “Tua looked real good back there today,” he said. “It felt like old times. Hopefully we can continue that momentum and continue attacking down the field.” However, many believe this is just a cover-up to get traded, as his actions on the field clearly showed his frustration toward Tagovailoa.

Moving forward, the Dolphins need to take a step back and evaluate the state of the franchise. At 31 years old, Hill still seems to have quite a bit left in the tank. While Tagovailoa has shown signs of greatness, there are plenty of reasons to believe he is not the long-term answer this team seeks. This situation also puts head coach Mike McDaniel on the hot seat, as a 0-3 start could potentially seal his fate.

If losses to the Indianapolis Colts and Patriots weren’t enough, the Dolphins have just a few days to prepare for the Buffalo Bills. Josh Allen and his crew have established themselves as one of the best teams in the league through the first two weeks. If they can dominate the Dolphins the way they just dominated the New York Jets, one can only imagine the fallout in Miami.
