After securing back-to-back Super Bowl titles, Patrick Mahomes and Co. begin their quest for the elusive NFL three-peat. While there hasn’t been much information on when and if the NFL will hand down a suspension to second-year wide receiver Rashee Rice for his offseason behavior, the Chiefs made some notable additions to the offense.

Kansas City signed speedster Marquise “Hollywood” Brown to a one-year, $7 million contract while also drafting Texas WR Xavier Worthy in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

While losing CB L’Jarius Sneed hurts, the Chiefs were not in the position to pay him the four-year $76.4 million contract Tennessee could, and they have a solid backup in Trent McDuffie to take his place. At the very least, they got a 2025 third-round pick.

While the offensive line stays relatively intact from last season, they will ask a lot from rookie second-round LT Kingsley Suamataia to protect Mahomes’ blindside. However, while the offense looks to be a bit stronger, many players left the defense to sign with other teams.

While DC Steve Spagnuolo still has the nuts and bolts of his defensive plan in place, will the newer players be able to fall into the holes created by departing veterans?

The Chiefs have looked unstoppable the past few seasons, and while 2023 was quite the challenge at times for Mahomes, it appears the front office will not make the same mistake again. But will the investment in the offense come at the cost of a stifling defense?

Meanwhile, the Jaguars hope to avenge a horrible end to the 2023 season. After starting the year 8-3, the Jaguars lost five of their last six games, fell out of first place in the AFC South, and missed the playoffs entirely. Now, with reputations and jobs on the line, the Jags hope to make a comeback, but it will be tough.

Despite Trevor Lawrence’s regression late last season, the fourth-year quarterback has continued to progress with each NFL season.

WR Christian Kirk remains with the team, while the offseason brought in Gabe Davis, Devin Duvernay, and rookie Brian Thomas Jr. to round out the receiving core. With Lawrence getting the start in today’s game, it will be interesting to see how he meshes with his new receivers.

Travis Etienne returns to Jacksonville, looking toward another solid season in the backfield. He’s crossed the 1,000-yard mark in both his seasons in the league and while his yardage was down in 2023, he had a career-high of eleven touchdowns and no fumbles. He even increased his productivity out of the backfield as a pass catcher, hauling in career-highs for receptions (58), yards (476), and one TD.

The Jaguars muscled up on defense, bringing in DT Arik Armstead to team up with Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker to bolster the defensive line.

While they released CB Darious Williams, the Jaguars brought in Ronald Darby and Darnell Savage to shore up the secondary. The Jaguars will need to see improvement on both offense and defense from last season to compete in a surprisingly competitive AFC South.

Chiefs vs. Jaguars Betting Preview

The sportsbooks are convinced this will be a high-scoring game, and when you look back at the Chiefs’ preseason from 2023, you can see why. All three of their games last year went over 45 points, and they seem to play their preseason games at a pace that increases opportunities. I think this could be a fun game to watch, even if we do not ultimately learn much from it. The spread here is pretty accurate, and that 40-point region is also fitting.

Fantasy Players to Watch

Jaguars WR Brian Thomas Jr.

It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that so many of the players we’re interested in are rookies. Brian Thomas Jr. is a prospect with a very high ceiling but also a very low floor. As a rookie, Thomas has the chance to start in two-receiver sets but could also find himself behind Gabe Davis. If Thomas performs well in preseason games, that could cement his status opposite Christian Kirk as Trevor Lawrence’s WR2. If he performs poorly, we may end up with a guy fantasy managers drop early in the season due to a lack of playing time.

Chiefs: RB Deneric Prince

The Chiefs are a team that always plays its starters in the preseason. While we are definitely interested to see how Hollywood Brown and Xavier Worthy look, RB Deneric Prince is the guy I’m most interested in seeing. Clyde Edwards-Helaire is the presumptive favorite to be the RB2 behind Isiah Pacheco. But apparently, Prince has been the second man during training camp drills. The order in which these players enter preseason games will determine how much that actually means. The Chiefs’ RB2 is worthy of being selected in fantasy drafts. If that guy is going to be Prince, we want to know.
