‘The Alarms Are Sounding’ — NFL Fans React to Concerning Update on J.J. McCarthy Amid QB’s Battle With Kyler Murray

NFL fans on social media react as ESPN writer shares concerning update on J.J. McCarthy amid his battle with Kyler Murray for Vikings' QB1.

There’s an exciting quarterback battle happening at the Minnesota Vikings between veteran Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy, who is entering his third year with the franchise.

McCarthy’s journey with the Vikings has been challenging so far, as he first missed his entire rookie year due to an injury in preseason, and then he also had to miss seven games in his second year.

The Vikings have now brought in former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Murray, who most of the analysts believe is the clear-cut winner in this QB battle.

Vikings Insider Shares Update on J.J. McCarthy’s Battle With Kyler Murray

ESPN’s Kevin Seifert, who covers the Vikings, shared an update on how McCarthy has performed so far in the training camp.

“McCarthy has thrown some well-placed deep-corner or out routes to receivers Dontae Fleming and Myles Price, but overall his accuracy has been inconsistent,” Seifert wrote. “Some of his passes over the middle have appeared late or slightly off target and resulted in incompletions.”

He continued, “Reasonable people can argue about exactly where McCarthy is on his developmental timeline. But no objective observer to training camp could say that he has made up the ground necessary to truly challenge Murray.”

It goes on to show that McCarthy hasn’t shown much improvement, which tends to signal that Murray will be the starting quarterback in Week 1.

In response to the assessment, NFL fans on social media shared their reactions.

“The alarms are sounding. I’m feeling very optimistic this clown show of a competition ends this weekend with a clear shift and/or statement from KOC declaring Kyler Murray QB1 publicly,” The Purple Persuasion, who covers the Vikings, wrote on X.

“Maybe I think more casually than the average diehard Vikings fan, but from what I’ve been reading and hearing, Kyler Murray is cut and dry the clear favorite to start week one and he should be,” Another fan on X added. “I’m not concerned about the one year deal, or finding ourselves in ‘veteran QB resurgence purgatory’ like we have been for decades, all I care about is what’s gonna give the Vikings the best chance to win in 2026 and I’ll worry about 2027 next March.”

“This was a good, unbiased read imo,” A user named ‘The Big Kaminski’ pointed out. “Might not be a bad thing to have McCarthy take a step back, keep developing, and let Kyler run the show. Hopefully, both continue to improve and then let the chips fall where they may.”

“Sports Krunch with DKrom” host David Kromelow wrote,” As everyone using their common sense expected. J.J. McCarthy is AWFUL.”

“You know you’re in trouble when Kyler is your best option,” one fan added on X.

“Nobody should be surprised.” A user named ‘Kevin’ added on X.

McCarthy was drafted as the No. 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. In 2025, he threw for 1,632 yards, while scoring 11 touchdowns against 12 interceptions. According to PFN’s QB Impact Metric, McCarthy posted an impact score of 67.0, ranking 34th in the league last season.

According to PFN’s QB Impact Metric, Murray finished as a top-10 quarterback in the league only once during his time with the Cardinals, in 2021, when he recorded an impact score of 80.1.

Murray joined the Vikings after signing a one-year, $1.3 million contract for the 2026 season. If he wins the job, which many think he will, the 29-year-old quarterback will be determined to make sure he gets another deal from Minnesota next year as the team is built to his strengths and head coach Kevin O’Connell will get the best out of him.

As for McCarthy, if Murray plays well this season, there is a good chance that the former will eventually be traded to another team.
