Aaron Rodgers was seeking a new team ahead of the 2025 NFL season, and apparently, the Minnesota Vikings were capable of signing him. They ultimately decided not to go in that direction, which may have been the wrong move. A recent report found that this controversial decision affected many individuals.
Vikings’ Decision to Pass on Aaron Rodgers Produces Detrimental Results
The Vikings were in a crucial spot last offseason at quarterback. Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones were both shockingly let go, with J.J. McCarthy being elevated to their starter. Minnesota also ultimately passed on signing Rodgers in free agency, creating a gamble that didn’t pay off for them this year.
A recent report from “The Athletic” outlined that their controversial quarterback decisions last offseason played a major role in general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s firing this year. It also apparently impacted many others associated with their choices, though the overall blame for the botched situation is reportedly still being questioned.
“Even this week, one team source brought up the subject again, saying, ‘I would still like to know who made that final decision (not to sign Rodgers). I still don’t know. What I do know is it affected a lot of livelihoods.”
Darnold spent just one season in Minnesota and achieved plenty of success as the Vikings’ starting quarterback. This included an impressive 14-3 record and a playoff berth. They also had Jones under contract, but parted ways with both of them to clear the path for McCarthy, whom they spent a first-round draft pick on in the year prior.
McCarthy was a massive disappointment this season, ranking just 37th among 48 qualified quarterbacks in PFSN’s Impact Rankings, while Darnold and Jones both finished among the top 13 this year. Making things even worse is that it’s been reported that they also had the opportunity to sign Rodgers in free agency, but decided to pass on the future Hall of Famer.
Rodgers eventually joined the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he won the AFC North division title and a playoff berth. The Vikings made the postseason in the season before with Darnold, who is now set to play in the Super Bowl for the Seattle Seahawks, but failed to return this year. They essentially gambled on McCarthy rather than going with a veteran, and at least for this year, it backfired.
