The Philadelphia Eagles looked primed to defend their Super Bowl title in 2025, but despite the talent across the roster, the offense often lacked cohesion and consistency. What should have been a dominant unit instead sputtered at key moments and eventually fell in the Wild Card round, prompting questions about the future of several offensive playmakers.
However, an even greater concern may be emerging on the defensive side of the ball. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, a crucial architect of the Eagles’ postseason success, is reportedly considering retirement, and according to a former Eagles standout, Philadelphia cannot afford to lose what he believes is the team’s true “secret weapon.”
Former Eagles Linebacker Sounds Alarm on Vic Fangio’s Potential Departure
Fangio first arrived in Philadelphia in 2023 on a two-week contract to help the Eagles prepare for Super Bowl 57 against the Kansas City Chiefs. Although Philadelphia fell 38–35 in that matchup, Fangio returned in 2024 as defensive coordinator and orchestrated a remarkable turnaround, elevating the unit from 30th to second in PFSN’s NFL Defense Impact Metric.
That defensive dominance carried into the postseason, where Fangio’s group overwhelmed Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, helping the Eagles capture just the second Super Bowl title in franchise history. While the defense remained elite the following season, the offense regressed significantly, and Philadelphia’s championship hopes unraveled.
Now, with Fangio reportedly considering retirement, former Eagles linebacker Emmanuel Acho believes his potential departure could have lasting consequences for the franchise.
“Vic Fangio was the secret weapon for the Philadelphia Eagles. If [he’s] gone, the Eagles’ post-season success is gone,” he said.

Acho emphasized Fangio’s ability to maintain cohesion and accountability on defense regardless of offensive struggles, while also maximizing the potential of young talent such as Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean.

“The defense has no egos, has no issues, has no flaws as it pertains to the entirety of the season,” Acho added. “They just show up and play football at an entirely high level, not to mention Vic Fangio has got the best out of players they could be, Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, Jalen Philips, Jordan Davis. If the Eagles lose Vic Fangio, the Eagles lose their long-term success.”
While the Eagles apparently claim to be confident that Fangio will return, NFL insiders also mentioned that they have explored alternative options, suggesting they may not be fully convinced that Fangio will not retire this year. Jim Schwartz and Jonathan Gannon were named as potential candidates to do so.
Schwartz is seeking a new team after reportedly becoming disgruntled with the Cleveland Browns, who passed on him in favor of hiring Todd Monken as their next head coach. Gannon was recently fired by the Arizona Cardinals and is not expected to get an immediate opportunity to return as a head coach.
Both prospective candidates have served as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator previously, but neither has been as consistently successful as Fangio in Philadelphia, as the franchise stands at a crossroads.
