Who Is the Jets’ Starting QB in Week 8? Latest on Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor’s Injury

Jets quarterback situation sees late twist as injuries and controversy force a pivotal decision ahead of their clash with the Bengals in Week 8.

The New York Jets’ quarterback situation took another dramatic turn ahead of their Week 8 matchup against the Bengals. After days of uncertainty and mixed signals from head coach Aaron Glenn, a definitive decision has surfaced, but not for reasons fans might have hoped.

With veteran Tyrod Taylor sidelined by a knee injury, the Jets’ offense will once again turn to Justin Fields under center.

Will the New York Jets Stick With Fields or Turn to Their Rookie Backup?

According to Brian Costello of the New York Post, Taylor has been ruled out of Sunday’s game due to a knee injury and “will not travel with the team to Cincinnati.”

Glenn had deflected questions during the week about whether Fields or Taylor would start, but Taylor’s condition appears more serious than initially indicated. The Jets listed him as questionable on Friday, yet he’s been shut down for the weekend.

Taylor revealed Thursday that the injury stemmed from a hit he took the previous week, saying, “I took a helmet shot to the knee last game. Yeah, just taking it day-by-day, listening to the trainers.”

The veteran underwent knee surgery this past summer and missed most of training camp, making this setback even more concerning given his limited recovery window.

Even before this injury, the Jets faced a brewing quarterback controversy. Glenn benched Fields at halftime in last Sunday’s 13-6 loss to Carolina after another sluggish start on offense. However, Taylor didn’t offer the spark the Jets needed, throwing two interceptions and failing to lead a touchdown drive. Fields, meanwhile, had been under heavy criticism after back-to-back weeks of lackluster play and poor pocket awareness.

Through six appearances, he’s completing 63.7% of his passes for 845 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions, per PFSN QB Impact metrics. He also remains a dangerous runner with 257 yards and three rushing scores.

From a data standpoint, Fields outperformed Taylor this season. According to PFSN’s QB Impact Comparison, Fields earned a score of 63.3 (Grade D), ranking 32nd overall, while Taylor posted a 56.0 (Grade F) and ranked 35th.

Fields’ turnover-free record and added rushing production give him a marginal edge, even if his passing efficiency, 5.0 net yards per attempt, remains below league average.

Jets owner Woody Johnson’s midweek comments at the owners’ meetings didn’t help calm speculation. He publicly criticized the team’s quarterback play, seemingly adding pressure to Glenn’s decision-making process. Still, circumstances chose him this week.

With Taylor unavailable and rookie Brady Cook elevated to backup duties, Fields effectively gets another chance to prove he can stabilize the Jets’ offense. The Bengals’ defense, ranked 31st in yards and points allowed, offers a rare opportunity for the embattled quarterback to reset.

After the bye, the Jets face a formidable Browns defense, making Week 8 critical for Fields’ future in green and white.
