The Los Angeles Chargers came apart in a strange way last season, and wide receiver Tyreek Hill could provide some relief. With an offense featuring superstar quarterback Justin Herbert, fans expected more from head coach Jim Harbaugh’s squad.
However, a collapsing pass game saw them dump out on Wild Card Weekend. How could an aging Hill help the situation?
Tyreek Hill Reuniting With Mike McDaniel at Chargers Could Be Explosive
As one of the fastest, if not still the fastest player in the NFL, Hill can still operate at an elite level. However, as with any player, age is the only thing that can slow him down, and at 32, staying healthy for the entire season becomes increasingly difficult. Hill missed 13 games last year due to a knee injury.
Still, when healthy, he can punish secondaries down the rails, and that’s exactly what Harbaugh and company can benefit from.
“Hill, 32, won’t make close to the $35 million he was due to make with the Dolphins, and he’s coming off a significant knee injury,” Fox Sports’ Greg Auman wrote. “Hill’s physical recovery could complicate his market, as it’s still unknown when he’ll be able to return to action.”
Hill has been nothing short of a revelation for the teams he’s played for in his career. As a fifth-round draft pick by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2016, he exploded to become their most dangerous receiver, catching passes from Patrick Mahomes.
With a Super Bowl ring in the bag, he traded Kansas for sunny Miami in 2022, where he ultimately put up the best numbers of his career. Playing under head coach Mike McDaniel, Hill recorded a 2023 campaign for the ages, bagging 119 receptions for 1,799 yards and 13 touchdowns.
“Teams must decide how likely it is that they’ll get anything close to his 2023 production, when he led the NFL in receiving yards,” Auman added.
“Could he land with Mike McDaniel and the Chargers? Los Angeles has been linked to veteran receivers early in free agency. He’ll likely get half the salary, but can reset himself with a healthy 2026.”
A possible reunion with McDaniel is particularly interesting, given that Hill had his best season yet under the offensive guru.
While McDaniel wasn’t successful enough in Miami, he still ran an electric offense with Hill, Jaylen Waddle, De’Von Achane, and Tua Tagovailoa at the wheel (86.8 PFSN Offense Impact in 2023).
The Chargers only have Ladd McConkey as a true threat in the wide receiver room. Adding an experienced speedster like Hill could open up defenses for the offense to return as a powerhouse in 2026.
