The start of the season was anything but smooth for Tyreek Hill and Tua Tagovailoa. Months after trade rumors and a rocky offseason, the Dolphins’ star receiver found himself navigating tension with his quarterback, a dynamic that threatened to overshadow his focus.
But instead of letting the strain weigh him down, Hill says Tagovailoa’s pointed remarks sparked a renewed determination, igniting a fire that pushed him to embrace every challenge on and off the field before a devastating knee injury cut short his season.
How Did Tua Tagovailoa’s Comments Fuel Tyreek Hill’s Motivation?
Last year in Tagovailoa’s absence, Hill struggled to make an impact. Even after the quarterback returned, he never recaptured the explosive form of his peak seasons, missing the Pro Bowl for the first time in nine years. The frustration boiled over, leading Hill to suggest a trade request that ultimately never materialized.
Now, Hill is back with a better focus, though Tagovailoa admits their relationship still needs some rebuilding.
“We’re still continuing (to rebuild it),” Tagovailoa said in late July. “But it’s not just with me–it’s with a lot of the guys. I’m not the only one who heard that. You guys aren’t the only people that heard that.”
“When you say something like that, you don’t just come back from that with ‘Hey my bad.’ You got to work that relationship up. You got to build everything up again. It’s still a work in process.”
Reflecting on that moment on ex-teammate Terron Armstead’s podcast, “The Set,” Hill credited Tagovailoa for sparking a renewed drive.
“He made me better from that,” Hill said. “Nobody wants to be the odd guy out in the locker room, and that instilled fire inside of me. That put a new spark inside of me like ‘I got to come to work every day, I got to show up on time and I got to show these guys that I’m still one of these ones.”

Hill also defended Tagovailoa’s controversial comments about teammates being late to player-led meetings.
“I kind of can feel what he’s saying because at the end of the day, that should show people that he wants to win,” Hill said.
Before his Week 4 injury, Hill had recorded 21 receptions for 265 yards and a touchdown. Though Tagovailoa has been inconsistent, he has kept the offense afloat in Hill’s absence. The bigger issue for the Dolphins has been the defense, which ranks 30th in PFSN’s Defensive Impact metric, contributing to the team’s 1-6 record.
