The Tennessee Titans got some tough news early in their preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Running back Tyjae Spears went down with a high ankle sprain, and it looks like he might miss a few weeks, maybe even some regular-season games.

The injury happened in the second quarter when Spears got tackled and his ankle rolled awkwardly. He didn’t get up quickly and had to get carted back to the locker room. Afterward, fans saw him on crutches with a walking boot, which isn’t the best sign for someone who was hoping for a healthy, productive season.
Titans head coach Brian Callahan confirmed the injury the day after the game.
“Spears is expected to miss some time here, a couple of weeks at least,” he said. “We’re waiting on some final word, but he definitely won’t be playing right away.”

This is especially disappointing for Spears because he already dealt with injuries last season, missing five games. The Titans were really counting on him to step up this year, adding some energy and versatility behind veteran Tony Pollard.
Even with limited playing time last year, Spears showed flashes that made fans excited. He had 84 carries for 312 yards and scored four touchdowns, enough to hint at the impact he could have if he stays healthy. The hope was that 2025 would be his breakout year.
Who Will Step Up With Spears Out?
Now, those hopes are on hold for a bit. If Spears’ absence extends into the regular season, Pollard will likely take on the majority of carries again. The Titans also have Julius Chestnut and rookie Kalel Mullings ready to chip in, but it’s clear that Pollard will carry the workload.
High ankle sprains can be tricky and sometimes linger longer than expected. Even if Spears gets back by the season opener against the Denver Broncos, he might not be 100% right away. The team will likely want to play it safe with him.
All eyes will be on Cam Ward during this preseason to see how the No. 1 overall pick will fare in the NFL.
However, for Spears, this is a frustrating setback in his young career. The hope is that his sprain isn’t too bad and he can return sooner than later, carving out a significant role behind Pollard and helping the Titans’ rushing attack.
