Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was added to the team’s injury report a few hours before Sunday’s Week 8 game against the Atlanta Falcons after waking up with a swollen left eye, according to CBS sideline reporter Melanie Collins. Never mind the swelling, Tagovailoa started the game and is wearing a visor for the first time in his career.
What is the Update on Tua Tagovailoa’s Health Condition?
The Miami Dolphins listed Tua Tagovailoa as having an illness, although he did not receive a game status designation and is playing. The swelling in his left eye appears to be connected to that illness rather than an injury.
The team has not provided additional details on the cause or severity of the condition.

Tagovailoa was also suffering with a left thumb issue, which had placed him on the injury report in previous weeks. He was, however, a full participant in all practices leading up to the Falcons game and had not previously been considered at risk of missing time.
Through seven games this season, Tagovailoa has completed 139 of 205 passes for 1,313 yards, 11 touchdowns, and an NFL-high 10 interceptions. He has a 73.9 PFN QB Impact Score with grade C and ranks 24 among all quarterbacks.
The Dolphins announced shortly before kickoff that Zach Wilson would be the backup quarterback, while rookie Quinn Ewers, who replaced Wilson as the No. 2 option last week and played late in Miami’s loss to the Cleveland Browns, was inactive. Meanwhile, primary wide receiver Tyreek Hill is also out with a season-ending knee injury, and Jaylen Waddle replaced him.
Meanwhile, to start out the game, the Dolphins won the coin toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff. On Miami’s first offensive series, Tagovailoa’s deep pass to running back De’Von Achane fell incomplete. He was also sacked on third down, and the Dolphins went three-and-out, forcing them to punt.
However, Miami found success on its next red-zone opportunity. With 2:33 remaining in the first quarter, Tagovailoa connected with Achane on a 3-yard touchdown pass on 2nd-and-goal from the Atlanta 3-yard line. Riley Patterson made the extra point. The score is 7-0 in favor of the Dolphins going into the second half.
Tagovailoa is looking to help the Dolphins end a three-game losing streak. Miami began the day with a 1-6 record following a stretch of inconsistent offensive performances, as he has thrown three interceptions in each of the past two games.
