The NFL world was rocked this weekend when Trent McDuffie was traded from the Kansas City Chiefs to the Los Angeles Rams in a high-impact deal. The cornerback quickly spoke out after the agreement.
Trent McDuffie Celebrates Explosive New Contract With the Los Angeles Rams
The now-highest-paid player in league history at his position reacted quickly to the news, initially reported by Adam Schefter. In his social media profile, McDuffie wrote a message with just three simple words: “God is Good,” alongside a blue heart emoji representing the Rams.

This new contract immediately puts pressure on teams with rising stars ready to renew. In this trade, agents for players such as Sauce Gardner (New York Jets) and Derek Stingley Jr. (Houston Texans) may use McDuffie’s deal as the ‘starting point’ for negotiations on the eve of free agency.
The new four-year, $124 million contract (reported first by ESPN) sets a new benchmark for CBs. Previously, the highest annual salaries for cornerbacks were achieved by Jaire Alexander (around $21 million per year) and Patrick Surtain II (around $24 million per year). McDuffie’s deal now exceeds those amounts in both total value and average annual salary.
By paying McDuffie (who ranks No. 56 in the PFSN CB Impact metric with a C grade) an elite amount, the Rams signal their preference for one of the league’s top three players at a critical position, even if they must fill the rest of the roster with minimum-salary draftees. To dilute the immediate salary cap impact, the franchise uses a high signing bonus, spreading the cost over the next five years.
McDuffie Will Have a Lot of Freedom in the Rams’ Defense
Unlike systems that keep the CB on one side, defensive coordinator Chris Shula’s scheme values versatility, which will be key to McDuffie’s success next season with the Rams.
McDuffie can shadow opposing receivers across the field, something the Rams missed in games against division rivals last season, especially against the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks.
In addition, McDuffie ranks among the best CBs in pressuring the quarterback. Since Shula sets up creative secondary blitzes to generate pressure, the former Chiefs player becomes a lethal weapon in that regard.
McDuffie will bring stability to the perimeter by forming a solid duo with players like Kamren Kinchens. This enables the Rams to play more man coverage, confident that their new CB will win matchups without constant safety help.
