Travis Kelce Makes Feelings Clear on Patrick Mahomes’ Hilarious Hot Mic Moment During Chiefs’ Week 7 Win vs. Raiders

Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes pulls off brilliant trick play acting vs Raiders on hot mic. Travis Kelce explains how they practiced the deception.

Creativity has been a staple for the Kansas City Chiefs, especially in short-yardage situations and the red zone. It has apparently worked for them, as they have won five AFC Championships and three Super Bowl rings in just the past six seasons during the Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce era.

Kelce recently discussed a viral moment from Week 7 of the 2025 NFL season in an episode of his “New Heights” podcast. It involved a Mahomes hot mic when the Kansas City Chiefs took on the Las Vegas Raiders recently.

What Happened during the Kansas City Chiefs vs the Raiders Game?

The broadcast microphones caught Mahomes yelling to head coach Andy Reid on the sidelines, before quickly snapping the ball and successfully converting on a fourth down. Kelce spoke about how this was the way that they had practiced it during their weekly preparations.

Kelce explained that the staged argument was essentially a part of the plan and that Mahomes pulled it off brilliantly. The quarterback pretended to disagree with Reid’s call on the crucial play to confuse the defense, which apparently worked the way they hoped it would.

Kelce stated, “Pat’s hilarious because we had been practicing it like this just to make a mockery, to have fun. The mic just happened to catch him saying, ‘This play never f****ng works.’ So good man, ten out of ten, it worked.”

Travis Kelce credits Patrick Mahomes with acting on a successful trick play

The Chiefs faced a 4th-and-1 early in the second quarter of their Week 7 game against the Raiders. They lined up to go for it, and following Mahomes’ theatrics, he promptly handed the ball off to Kareem Hunt, who gained three yards on the successful conversion.

The quarterback was caught on camera yelling at head coach Reid that this play call never works. This would theoretically make the defense think that he isn’t going to snap the ball, but if that were the assumption, they would have been wrong. Mahomes quickly scampered to the line of scrimmage after the rant and snapped the ball.

Kelce gave Mahomes his props for making it believable after admitting they had fun with the idea during their weekly practices. They pulled it off on the first play of the second quarter, extending a drive that resulted in a touchdown to make it a 14-0 game. They never looked back from there and eventually won a 31-0 blowout.
