On Friday, CBS placed Tony Romo on indefinite leave, just eight days after the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback was arrested in Milwaukee on suspicion of operating while intoxicated (OWI).
The move immediately sparked questions about who could eventually take over one of the network’s biggest broadcasting roles. Now, Aaron Rodgers has emerged as a potential candidate.
Aaron Rodgers Floated As Tony Romo’s Long-Term Replacement at CBS, Dividing NFL World
While Romo is on leave, NFL legend J.J. Watt will replace him in the broadcast booth alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson.
However, a report by Awful Announcing’s Brandon Contes floated the idea that Rodgers could be Romo’s long-term replacement.
“No matter how great Watt does, he seems like a great candidate to keep the seat warm at CBS for whoever they deem the next big thing, much like Greg Olsen once did for Fox and [Tom] Brady,” he wrote. “And if CBS wants to chase Tom Brady-like stardom, the next big thing might have to be Aaron Rodgers.”
Rodgers has said that he will retire after this final season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and it’s worth noting that he has stated that he and his wife will be out of the spotlight once he’s done with football.
“We’re not going to live a public life,” Rodgers said earlier this year. “We’re not going to now. Not in the future. Not ever. When this is done, it’s Keyser Söze. You won’t see me. I’m not doing TV. I’m not going to be out and about.”
However, Contes notes that Rodgers has served as a guest host on “Jeopardy” and expressed interest in a permanent gig, so the idea of him becoming a broadcaster isn’t crazy. Perhaps CBS can get him to change his mind with the right offer once he’s done playing.

The NFL world was divided on Rodgers potentially replacing Romo, with some pushing back on the idea and others arguing that he would be great. Rodgers has an elite football mind, and he’s clearly had a legendary career. However, he has become a very polarizing figure due to his controversial statements off the field.

One fan simply posted, “Yuck,” while another added, “Hope not!”
“Please God no,” another user chimed in.
Others argued he would be a solid choice.
“He would do great,” one user wrote. “Elite ball knowledge.”
“Rodgers claims he’ll be out of the spotlight post-career, but we know he won’t be able to resist,” one influencer posted on X. “I like him as a studio guy to replace Terry Bradshaw, but he could be an elite announcer, IMO. If he stays on football & vibes with the play-by-play guy, he can succeed quickly.”
Rodgers prefers his privacy, but perhaps the right opportunity and offer could change that stance. After all, Brady signed a 10-year, $375 million with Fox to become its lead NFL analyst.
For now, Rodgers remains focused on his 22nd and final NFL season with the Steelers. Last season, Rodgers ranked 29th in PFN’s QB Impact Score after throwing for 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions.
