Super Bowl Champion T.J. Ward’s Blunt J.J. McCarthy Assessment Shows Vikings Were Right To Sign Kyler Murray

T.J. Ward calls J.J. McCarthy 'not a starting quarterback,' and the Vikings' Kyler Murray signing validates that assessment.

The decision by the Minnesota Vikings to bring in Kyler Murray says a lot about J.J. McCarthy and his future in Minnesota. Former Super Bowl champion T.J. Ward discussed the situation during a recent segment on The Arena’s Gridiron show.

T.J. Ward Questions Whether J.J. McCarthy Is an NFL Starter

Ward did not soften his stance when the conversation turned to McCarthy and what he believes the young quarterback’s ceiling might be at the professional level.

“As far as J.J. (McCarthy) man, we’ve seen what he is in the last few years,” Ward said. “He’s not a starting quarterback in this league. He’s not gonna start for anybody. And if I was the opposing team, I wouldn’t trade for him.”

Ward’s comments arrive at a time when Minnesota appears ready to course correct. The Vikings moved quickly after the Arizona Cardinals released Murray. The former No. 1 overall pick agreed to a one-year deal with Minnesota as he looks to rebuild his value and lead a playoff contender.

The move creates direct competition between Murray and McCarthy for the starting job.

McCarthy entered the league with significant expectations after helping lead Michigan to a national championship. His transition to the NFL has been uneven so far. Injuries limited his availability over the past two seasons, and the offense struggled.

The numbers reflect that gap in production. According to the PFSN NFL QB Impact metrics, McCarthy ranked 37th among quarterbacks. Murray finished 21st in the same metric.

Minnesota still finished 9-8 despite the instability at quarterback. The roster around the position remains strong, but the team’s window with several key veteran starters is shrinking.

Star receiver Justin Jefferson experienced the least productive season of his career as the Vikings cycled through inconsistent quarterback play. A healthy and productive Murray would give Minnesota’s offense a veteran presence capable of pushing the ball downfield and extending plays with his mobility.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell now has two very different quarterbacks to evaluate. McCarthy represents a younger developmental option who still carries upside. Murray arrives with a longer rĂ©sumĂ© that includes two Pro Bowl appearances and several seasons of high-level production.

Ward’s remarks highlight how uncertain McCarthy’s future in Minnesota has become.

Minnesota’s coaching staff will ultimately decide how the competition unfolds during the offseason and training camp. Murray’s track record and experience, however, give him a strong opportunity to claim the starting role if he performs well.
