‘I’m a Gunslinger’ — Titans QB Cam Ward Sends Bold Message to Rest of NFL, Proving He Doesn’t Lack Confidence

Cam Ward is being direct and clear about his confidence level heading into the NFL. Despite what the critics might say, or not say, he weighs in.

Cam Ward’s confidence is as high as ever as he begins his NFL journey with the Tennessee Titans. When asked to rate his confidence level, the No. 1 overall pick didn’t hesitate. “Ten,” Ward said with a smile. “At the end of the day, I’m a gunslinger.”

Ward’s self-assurance has been a sure sign throughout his football career, from his days as an overlooked high school recruit in San Antonio to stops at Incarnate Word, Washington State, and Miami. Now, as he steps into the spotlight in Nashville, Ward is embracing the challenge of leading a franchise eager for a turnaround.

Cam Ward leaves little to the imagination about his confidence.

The Titans’ front office and coaching staff have praised Ward’s leadership and strength, traits that stood out during the draft process. Head coach Brian Callahan described Ward as “the player, but also the person that he is, the leader and the teammate,” adding, “We didn’t think there was anyone more deserving to really represent this franchise than Cam Ward.”

Ward’s journey to the NFL has shaped his approach to the game. “I really don’t care what the outside world sees me as,” Ward said. “The only thing I care about is my teammates in the building. At the end of the day, I just want to win football games.”

The quarterback’s aggressive, playmaking style has drawn comparisons to NFL stars like Mahomes. Ward embraces the “gunslinger” label, crediting his longtime quarterback coach Daryl Cobert for helping him refine his mechanics without changing his natural instincts.

“He knows I can do some crazy stuff on the field. I live for moments like that. But he also knows I’m a gunslinger, that’s who I am, that’s who I’ll always be as long as I play football,” Ward said.

Ward’s confidence will be tested as he transitions to the NFL, but he’s already focused on building relationships with his new teammates and learning from the Titans’ veteran leaders. “I just think my journey, what I’ve been through, has prepared me for this moment,” Ward said. “I’m excited to get to work and do whatever it takes to win.”

The Titans have a brutal schedule that will test their secondary. Defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson will have to contend with Patrick Mahomes, Matt Stafford, CJ Stroud, Justin Herbert, and Brock Purdy in the first half of the season.
