Tim Tebow Reveals How Bill Belichick Cost Him $1 Million in 1 Day During Patriots Stint

The story of Tim Tebow’s brief run with the New England Patriots has resurfaced, but this time, it comes with a costly twist. In a recent interview, the former quarterback revealed how one of the biggest financial decisions of his career, made out of loyalty and respect for his coach, turned into one of his biggest regrets.

Why Did Tim Tebow Turn Down a $1 Million Payday?

In an emotional conversation on “Graham Bensinger’s” YouTube channel, Tim Tebow shared the painful memory from his short-lived 2013 tenure with the Patriots. At the time, he had just joined the team and was fighting to secure a spot on Bill Belichick’s roster when a lucrative, one-day endorsement opportunity suddenly appeared.

“It just was an awesome opportunity from a really good company for really amazing things and they really wanted me to be a part of it,” Tebow recalled. “It was during an off day.”

The offer was for an astonishing $1 million, a figure that dwarfed what Tebow was set to earn with the Patriots. However, when he joined the team that summer, Belichick had made one expectation clear: stay quiet and avoid the spotlight. Tebow, wanting to be a good teammate, agreed to the terms. According to PFSN’s Offense Impact metric, the Patriots have the tenth-ranked offense in the league.

“I was asked by him, when I joined the team, to do my best of going under the radar and not bring too much attention. I said, ‘Yes sir, I’ll do my best,’” Tebow said.

Adhering to that agreement, Tebow decided he should consult his coach before accepting the deal. He trusted Belichick, who he said was always honest and kind. “So I called him and said, ‘Hey, this is an opportunity,’” Tebow explained on the podcast.

Belichick’s response was direct and decisive. “Timmy, I’d really appreciate it if you turned it down,” he told him.

Out of respect, Tebow honored the request and walked away from the million-dollar deal. This decision was made despite him not having a guaranteed spot on the roster. His two-year contract with the Patriots carried zero guaranteed money and only a base salary of $630,000 for the 2013 season. “I don’t think it was like even a contract. I’m just trying to make the team,” he admitted.

The situation took a sharp turn just a few days later. After Tebow rejected the massive offer to align with his coach’s wishes, the Patriots released him. Looking back, the financial sting is obvious. A single day of endorsement work could have paid him nearly twice what an entire season with the team might have earned. “Maybe I should have said yes cuz I got cut a few days later,” Tebow said with a laugh.

Even with hindsight, Tebow refuses to dwell on the financial loss. Instead, he uses the experience to emphasize the value of integrity and commitment. While most people would view the choice as a painful mistake, Tebow frames it as a powerful lesson about character, suggesting some principles are worth more than the money in a bank account.
