New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo was playing well as a rookie before a devastating injury prematurely ended his campaign. Now, he is confident that he can return even better than before.
The Giants running back recently set a lofty goal for the 2026 NFL season, and the NFL world quickly roasted him.
Cam Skattebo 2,000-Yard Prediction Prompts NFL Community to Roast His Math Skills
“I had 400 yards on 100 carries. When I play 17-plus games this year, it’s going to be 300 carries for over 2,000 yards,” said Skattebo, who ranked 34th in PFSN’s Running Back Impact metric last season.
The NFL world was quick to point out that Skattebo’s math was a bit off. Skattebo rushed for 410 yards on 4.1 yards per carry. Even if he got 300 carries, he’d total 1,230 yards. This would be a solid season, but he’d fall well below his 2,000-yard goal.
After all, 2,000 yards would be a historic feat, as only nine players in NFL history have hit this mark in a single season: Saquon Barkley, Derrick Henry, Adrian Peterson, Chris Johnson, Jamal Lewis, Terrell Davis, Barry Sanders, Eric Dickerson, O.J. Simpson.
Many NFL observers clowned Skattebo’s math skills after his quote went viral.
Bleacher Report’s Daniel Harms kept it short and simple, writing, “The math isn’t mathing, Cam.”

Establish the Run’s Pat Thorman chimed in, “When a kid runs padless into telephone poles grows up and tries math.”
One football YouTuber was blunt and brutally funny: “…this man’s contract is void. He is clearly incompetent of consent.”
The memes that followed were equally savage.
Kicker’s Adrian Franke poked fun at Skattebo’s questionable arithmetic.

TMZ’s Michael Grier also got in on the fun.

Not everyone was making fun of Skattebo, though. Former Super Bowl champion Mitchell Schwartz came to his defense.
“I’m just as quick to make fun of people as the next guy but he was not doing some math extrapolation. He’s just saying he wants 300+ carries and he thinks if he gets that he can go over 2,000 yards,” Schwartz wrote.

Regardless, nobody should be surprised by Skattebo’s confidence. His personality and chip-on-his-shoulder approach to the game is part of what made him a fan favorite in recent years. He’s a character who’s gritty, physical, and plays with a motor that doesn’t quit.
Those qualities helped him impress throughout his rookie year before his dislocated ankle, fractured fibula, and ruptured deltoid ligament ended his season in Week 8.
He’s also been open about how difficult his recovery has been mentally.
“Obviously there’s ups and downs in the injury process,” he said recently. “The mental battle has been the hardest part: making sure that I trust it fully.” He did make one thing crystal clear though. He fully expects to be ready for Week 1 of the 2026 season.
And maybe that’s the bigger story here: a guy coming back from a brutal ankle injury, refusing to shrink his goals, and setting the bar as high as humanly possible… even if the math is a little shaky.
