What Happened to Terry McLaurin? Breaking Down the Commanders Star’s Recent Injury

Commanders wideout Terry McLaurin is expected to return on Monday night after missing time with an injury. Here’s what happened and how he’s recovering.

The Washington Commanders enter Monday Night Football in desperate need of help at wide receiver, especially with starting quarterback Jayden Daniels sidelined. That makes the potential return of star wideout Terry McLaurin all the more crucial for the offense.

McLaurin has missed time since Week 3 due to injury, but after practicing in full throughout the week, he’s now expected to suit up tonight. Here’s a closer look at what kept him off the field and how he’s trending ahead of his return.

What Was Terry McLaurin’s Injury?

McLaurin originally sustained his quad injury with 4:47 remaining in the third quarter during Washington’s Week 3 victory over Las Vegas. The injury occurred when he dove toward the end zone on what appeared to be a 56-yard touchdown before officials overturned the score upon review.

What began as a seemingly routine quadriceps strain evolved into a prolonged absence after McLaurin consulted multiple medical specialists, including core muscle expert Dr. William Meyers. The involvement of such a specialized physician suggested the problem might be more serious than originally assessed.

The veteran receiver missed four consecutive games, extending his absence through Week 7’s loss to Dallas. This marked the longest absence of his NFL career, having missed only three total games from 2019 through 2024.

For weeks, head coach Dan Quinn expressed optimism that McLaurin would be able to return to action, but the veteran wide receiver didn’t come close to actually playing. He was listed as a limited participant in previous estimated practice reports but repeatedly failed to progress to full participation.

However, McLaurin practiced fully through this week and is now expected to play against the Chiefs tonight.

“I’m happy to say that I feel like myself, so I’m just looking forward to getting back out there,” McLaurin said.

With Marcus Mariota set to take over at quarterback, he will need all the help he can get. That means McLaurin is set to be back in the lineup to add some explosiveness to the passing game.

Through three games before the injury, McLaurin had managed 10 catches for 149 yards but had not yet recorded an end zone target while carrying his lowest on-field target share of his career through the first month. However, those numbers reflected early-season growing pains with Daniels rather than any decline in McLaurin’s abilities.

According to PFSN’s Jason Katz, fantasy managers should feel cautiously optimistic about McLaurin’s return. However, with the two-time Pro Bowler only having played one prior game with Mariota, it remains to be seen how quickly the two can develop rhythm and timing on the field.
