In their 2023 US Open match, Gauff staged a remarkable comeback victory over Siegemund, winning with a scoreline of 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. In the match, the world No. 3 became frustrated with Siegemund’s lengthy service preparations.

During the third set, Gauff confronted the chair umpire, tearfully requesting that time violations be enforced against Siegemund. In light of the American’s protest, the crowd supported the home favorite and booed the German during the match.

Gauff didn’t hold back to voice her frustration to the chair umpire, emphasizing that her opponent wasn’t ready to receive serve on multiple occasions, saying, “She’s never ready when I’m serving… My serve, she has to be ready.”

What Did Coco Gauff and Laura Siegemund Say After Their Match at the US Open?

Following the match, during the post-match press conference, Gauff described the match as “tough” and referred to Siegemund as “not an easy opponent.” She also expressed her happiness at overcoming “a lot of adversities” to secure the win.

“It was a tough match, I wasn’t playing my best tennis. Laura, she’s not an easy opponent. And you know I was able to overcome a lot of adversities so I’m happy with how I played today or happy how I managed to get through it,” Gauff said.

In her press conference, Siegemund shared her feelings of being treated poorly by the crowd, stating that she felt like a “zero” and a “cheater” due to the boos she received as the crowd rallied behind Gauff.

“It feels pretty much like a flat zero, even less than zero because they treated me bad. They treated me like I was a cheater. Like I was like, trying sneaky ways to win this match or something. They treated me like I was a bad person” Siegemund said.

At the 2025 Wuhan Open, the winner of the quarterfinal match between Gauff and Siegemund will advance to face either second seed Iga Świątek or seventh seed Jasmine Paolini in the semifinals.
