Venus Williams’ Emotional Moment During Post-Match Press Conference

Williams came out ready in front of her home crowd in her record 25th US Open appearance. After falling behind 0-2, she fought back to lead 3-2 but slipped with double faults and errors, eventually losing the first set 3-6. Although the 45-year-old bounced back to win the set 6-2, last year’s semifinalist, Muchová, stepped up in the final set with , and won the match 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.

Williams’, who made a comeback to tennis not long back after 16 months away from the sport, had an emotional moment during her post-match press conference when asked about what she proved to herself. The former World No. 1 said:

“I think for me getting back on the court was about giving myself a chance to play more healthy. And when you play unhealthy, it’s in your mind. It’s not just how you feel. You get stuck in your mind too. So, it was nice to be here.”

She then held back tears.

Williams looked back on her 2020 US Open match against Muchová and recalled the pain and discomfort she felt before comparing it to the freedom she had this time, stating:

“I was so uncomfortable, I wasn’t well, I was in so much pain. Today it’s night and day how much better I felt. So I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to play in feeling better. And at that rate, I have a real chance.”

What’s Next for Williams?

In the past few years, Williams has gone through some tough setbacks. Since reaching the 2017 US Open semifinals, she has battled constant injuries and the effects of Sjögren’s syndrome. Since 2021, early Grand Slam exits have become common for her.

Earlier before the Cincinnati Open, Williams was asked about the rest of her 2025 season, and she said:

“I probably won’t qualify for the [WTA Finals]. I won’t be there. Typically, I’ve never played much after the US Open, so you probably won’t see me after the Open.”

As of now, the 45-year-old has won just one out of four matches so far in the 2025 season.
