Tommy Paul recently spoke about the injury he struggled with during his second-round match at the 2025 French Open.
In the lead-up to this clay-court Major, Paul competed in the 2025 Italian Open, where he defeated Roberto Bautista Agut, Tomáš Macháč, Alex de Minaur, and Hubert Hurkacz before losing to eventual runner-up, Jannik Sinner, in the semifinals.
Tommy Paul Opens Up About Struggles With Injury During French Open 2R Match
Paul, seeded 12th at the 2025 French Open, began his campaign by defeating lucky loser Elmer Møller in the first round, winning the match 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-3, 6-1. He then faced Márton Fucsovics in the second round, losing the first two sets 4-6, 2-6. However, he made a remarkable comeback to register a 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 win.
Following his victory over Fucsovics, Paul spoke about the injury he struggled with throughout the match.The American revealed that he felt a strain in his lower abdomen at the start of the fixture, which intensified as it progressed.
“I’ve been dealing with a bunch of things but just something in my lower ab I have been dealing with. I mean, for most of the match I was feeling it and then there at like two all in the fifth it started. I don’t even know if it was like one shot or something but it started bugging me worse,” Paul said in his post-match press conference.
The former World No. 9 said that there was no treatment available to help him with his injury during the match, which is why he chose not to take a medical timeout.
“I just knew that there wasn’t any treatment to really fix it. That’s why we didn’t do a medical timeout. I just wanted to hear basically him be like, ‘You should be fine to keep going.’ He didn’t tell me that but it was good to talk to someone I guess,” he added.
Tommy Paul To Face Karen Khachanov at the 2025 French Open 3R
After beating Márton Fucsovics, Tommy Paul will face 24th seed Karen Khachanov in the third round of the French Open.

Khachanov began his campaign at the clay-court Major by defeating Aleksandar Vukic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 before triumphing 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 win over Sebastian Ofner to move into the third round.
Paul and Khachanov have met twice on the ATP Tour previously, with the American winning on both occasions. Their most recent encounter came in the third round of the 2025 Madrid Open, where Paul triumphed 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Whoever out of the two comes out on top, will face either 25th seed Alexei Popyrin or Nuno Borges in the fourth round of the French Open.
