Taylor Townsend was offered no time to prepare for her short-lived Australian Open 2026 singles campaign. The American player, who failed to make the main draw as a qualifier, received a last-minute lucky loser offer after former Wimbledon champion Markéta Vondroušová announced her sudden withdrawal. She faced compatriot Hailey Baptiste in the first round.
Townsend was in the headlines at the US Open last year, after matching her deepest singles run at a Grand Slam. She beat the likes of Antonia Ružić, Jelena Ostapenko, and Mirra Andreeva before suffering a brutal loss to Barbora Krejčíková in the fourth round after being denied eight match points.
How Did Taylor Townsend Enter Australian Open Singles Main Draw?
Townsend, presently ranked No. 116 in singles, fell short of a direct entry into the main draw. The American contested qualifying rounds, winning her first two matches. She, however, stumbled in her final hurdle against local Storm Hunter.

On Sunday, January 18, Townsend was offered a late lifeline when Vondroušová, seeded 32nd, opted out just hours before her match against Baptiste. The Czech was spotted practicing ahead of the encounter but ultimately decided to give up her spot amid lingering shoulder issues.
“I’m really sorry that I had to withdraw from the Australian Open due to ongoing shoulder issues. After everything I’ve been dealing with, I need to prioritize my health, even though this decision wasn’t easy. Thank you all for your understanding and support,” Vondroušová wrote in her apology message on Instagram.

Townsend, who was one of the highest-ranked players to lose in the final qualifying round, replaced the former World No. 6 as a lucky loser.
Townsend Knocked Out by Fellow American Hailey Baptiste
Townsend was off to a slow start against Baptiste, ranked No. 66 in the world. After losing her opening game and eventually the set, though, the former challenged her compatriot with an intense battle in the second set. She forced a decider with a convincing tiebreak.
Baptiste, however, made the first move in the final set. She maintained the lead to close out the match with a 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-3 score, thus ending her compatriot’s brief singles campaign in two hours and 39 minutes.

Despite the defeat, Townsend remains alive at the tournament. The American, ranked No. 2 in women’s doubles, is the top seed alongside her Czech partner, Kateřina Siniaková. The pair begin their title defense against Anna Siskova and Magali Kempen.
