Coco Gauff, Amanda Anisimova, Ben Shelton, Taylor Fritz Headline 38 Americans Battling in Australian Open Singles

Coco Gauff, Amanda Anisimova, Taylor Fritz, and Ben Shelton lead a 38-member American contingent for singles at the 2026 Australian Open.

There will be a total of 38 American players at the 2026 Australian Open. American players at a Slam are always under extra scrutiny, as the country has a rich history in the biggest events in the tennis world.

While the women have been delivering the Majors in recent years, an American male player has yet to win one of these coveted Slams in over two decades. Let’s take a look at the American contingent in the upcoming Australian Open.

Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton Lead the American Men’s Field at the Australian Open

Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton will be leading the 20-man American contingent at the first Major of the year. There were a total of 16 American male players who got direct entry in the main draw, of which Shelton and Fritz are the eighth and ninth seeds, respectively.

In addition to those two, there are four other seeded American players in the men’s draw, including Tommy Paul (19th seed), Learner Tien (25th seed), Brandon Nakashima (27th seed), and Frances Tiafoe (29th seed).

Apart from the six seeded players, there are ten unseeded American players who received direct entry into the main draw. Within that group, there are two former top 20 players in Sebastian Korda and Reilly Opelka. The others are Aleksandar Kovacevic, Jenson Brooksby, Alex Michelsen, Emilio Nava, Marcos Giron, Ethan Quinn, and Elliot Spizzirri.

Patrick Kyspon is the only American wildcard in the men’s draw at the Australian Open.

Coco Gauff, Madison Keys, Are Among The Pre-Tournament Favorites For The American Women At The Australian Open

There are four American female players in the top 10 seeds in the main draw at the 2026 Australian Open. Coco Gauff is the highest-seeded American woman in the draw at No. 3 and is one of the pre-tournament favorites.

Then there is the fourth-seeded Amanda Anisimova, who reached consecutive Major finals last year and will look to continue that momentum. Sixth-seeded Jessica Pegula is always a reliable player at Majors and reaches the second week, whereas ninth-seeded Madison Keys is the defending champion who will be looking to repeat her Melbourne fairytale from last year.

There are three other seeded American players in the women’s draw: 15th-seeded Emma Navarro, who was a quarterfinalist last year, 27th-seeded Sofia Kenin, who won the title in Melbourne back in 2020, and 29th-seeded Iva Jovic, who is one of the young stars on the WTA Tour.

Eight unseeded American players have gained direct entry in the women’s draw, including Caty McNally, Katie Volynets, Peyton Stearns, Alycia Parks, Hailey Baptiste, Ann Li, McCartney Kessler, and Ashlyn Krueger.

There are two American players in the women’s draw at the 2026 Australian Open. One of them was upcoming player Elizabeth Mandalik, whereas the other was seven-time Major champion and a two-time runner-up in Melbourne, Venus Williams.

Sloane Stephens Leads the American Qualifiers at the Australian Open

Five American qualifiers gained entry in the main draw of the 2026 Australian Open after the qualifiers ended on Thursday (Jan. 15). Of the five, there is one woman, and it is none other than former Major champion, Sloane Stephens.

Stephens, who is a former US Open champ and a runner-up at the French Open, had her best run in Melbourne back in 2013, when she reached the semifinal.

The four American qualifiers on the men’s side include Nishesh Basavareddy, who played a good match against Novak Djokovic last year, Martin Damm, Zachary Svajda, and Michael Zheng.

Considering the draws, it will be difficult for any of the American men to end the Grand Slam drought, largely due to the dominance of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. However, on the women’s side, there is a distinct possibility of an American champion being crowned with the likes of Gauff, Keys, and Anisimova being in the draw.
