How Did Taylor Townsend’s Comments Spark Fan Fury at Billie Jean King Cup Finals?

Team USA is seeded third at the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup Finals and will begin its campaign against Team Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals. The winner of this tie will advance to face either the second-seeded Team Great Britain or Team Japan in the semifinals.

Before the USA’s quarterfinal match against Kazakhstan, Townsend took to social media during a team dinner to voice her displeasure about the food provided, which was quite different from typical American cuisine. She specifically criticized dishes made with bullfrogs, turtles, and chicken gizzards, among others.

Townsend’s comments on the Chinese food at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals did not sit well with fans, who expressed their thoughts on social media.

One fan noted that Townsend did not even realise how her remarks about Chinese cuisine were “insensitive,” highlighting that “racism” towards Asians has become too normalized.

“racism/xenophobia towards asians is so normalised lol, like she didn’t even feel that she sounds so insensitive there,” a fan posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Another fan described the doubles World No. 1’s comments as “disrespectful.”

“She’s been to Asia before, so it’s not her first rodeo, why go out of your way and do this?  Go to a restaurant that serves your favorite cuisine and enjoy your food! Problem solved! But this is just disrespectful,” a fan wrote.

One fan expressed that Townsend’s remarks undermined the “goodwill” she had gained following her confrontation with Jeļena Ostapenko during the 2025 US Open. In that incident, the Latvian had apparently referred to Townsend as someone with “no class” and “no education,” which drew heavy criticism from the tennis community.

“Threw away any goodwill she gained from the Penko incident,” a fan posted.

Another fan was even more scathing. “Just proved that Penko was right about that “uneducated” comment 😗,” they wrote.

“This doesn’t make Ostapenko correct lmfao now they’re just both racially insensitive,” a fan posted.

“a well-educated person should know how to respect other cultures,” a fan wrote.

In 2024, during the Asian swing of the Tour, players like Paula Badosa and Magda Linette also faced backlash for comments and images that mocked Asian culture.
