Taylor Townsend found herself dealing with unexpected surprises beyond the court ahead of Team USA’s quarterfinal tie at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen, China. The world No. 1 women’s doubles player shared her bewilderment over the dinner options through a series of candid Instagram stories that quickly caught fans’ attention.
Why Was Taylor Townsend Shocked at the BJK Cup Gala Dinner?
The Billie Jean King Cup Finals brought together eight teams to compete in Shenzhen Bay Sports Center from September 16-21, marking the first time the finals were held in Asia since 1989. Team USA arrived in China with a strong lineup featuring Jessica Pegula, Emma Navarro, McCartney Kessler, Hailey Baptiste, and doubles specialist Taylor Townsend.
During the team dinner ahead of the USA’s quarterfinal match against Kazakhstan, Townsend experienced a cultural shock that she documented in detail on her Instagram stories. The 29-year-old player was visibly stunned by various food items served at the buffet, particularly large Chinese sausages and other local delicacies.
In her Instagram stories, Townsend expressed her disbelief with teammate Hailey Baptiste by her side. “Day 3, we’re at dinner, and look. Yo, what the hell? What the hell, I’m saying?” she said in one video. Baptiste jokingly responded that she was “starting with that,” prompting Townsend to quip, “Oh, I didn’t know you swung that way.”

Another story showed Townsend’s shock at seeing certain dishes up close. “You guys, this is crazy. This angle is f***ing nuts. This is crazy! I’ve never seen one of these up close, especially not to eat. That is crazy,” she told Baptiste, asking her teammate to “make sure you get that.”

Later that evening, while recovering in her hotel room, Townsend reflected on the dining experience with continued amazement. She shared her concerns about various seafood and meat options, questioning the safety and preparation of items like bullfrogs and turtle dishes.
“As I go back on my Instagram stories and I look and I’m like, ‘These people are really literally killing bullfrogs, aren’t those poisonous? Aren’t those the ones that are giving you warts and boils? And turtles?’ And the fact that it’s all stewed up with like chilies, peppers, and onions. Like, ‘Oh, you really made this a dish,'” Townsend said.

She gave the overall food experience “a solid 2 out of 10,” stating:
“There was every type of seafood there, crawfish, but also, they had like saute skewers and they have like chicken and gizzards, and like, hearts and there’s that big a** lung, like sliced up. I don’t know what type of animal that was, but it was an animal lung. I was like ‘what?'”

What are the Challenges Ahead of Team USA at the Billie Jean King Cup?
The 2025 Billie Jean King Cup Finals feature eight nations competing in a knockout format, with defending champions Italy and host nation China among the favorites. Team USA enters the tournament seeking their 19th Billie Jean King Cup title, though they face an eight-year title drought, having lifted the trophy only once in the last 25 years.
USA’s quarterfinal opponent, Kazakhstan, presents a formidable challenge, led by world No. 10 Elena Rybakina and No. 61 Yulia Putintseva. Both players proved instrumental in Kazakhstan’s qualification, with Rybakina and Putintseva securing convincing victories over Colombia in April to book their finals spot.
Captain Lindsay Davenport leads the American squad, with world No. 7 Jessica Pegula headlining the team alongside World No. 18 Emma Navarro. The quarterfinal tie takes place on Thursday, September 18.
The winner of USA versus Kazakhstan will advance to face either Great Britain or Japan in the semifinals on September 20, with the final scheduled for September 21.
