Taylor Townsend’s impressive 2025 US Open campaign came to an end in the fourth-round match against the 2024 Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejčíková. Despite the home crowd’s support, Townsend couldn’t maintain her momentum throughout the tournament and lost 6-1, 6-7(13), 3-6 in three hours and four minutes.
Meanwhile, a tennis fan who was supporting Krejčíková is going viral after his act during the fourth-round match.
The Heartbreaking Fourth Round Match Between Taylor Townsend and Barbora Krejčíková
Townsend stormed through the first set in just 29 minutes, winning six games in a row by mixing aggressive net play with heavy groundstrokes for a 6-1 opener. The second set turned into a marathon. Townsend broke to lead 3-1, but Krejčíková rallied to force a tiebreak.
The breaker extended 25 minutes, becoming the longest of the tournament. Townsend held three match points at 6-3 and two more at 12-11 and 13-12, only to see them slip away through unforced errors and stunning winners from Krejčíková. Ultimately, the Czech prevailed 15-13, saving all eight match points and shifting momentum.
In the final set, Krejčíková broke early and consolidated her lead with deep backhands and precise serves. Townsend managed one break back at 3-4, but Krejčíková responded immediately, breaking again to seal victory 6-3. The contest electrified Louis Armstrong Stadium, with Townsend’s tearful embrace of Krejčíková at the net drawing a standing ovation for both competitors.
This defeat was particularly painful for Townsend, as she was looking forward to entering her first Grand Slam singles quarterfinal, with her fourth-round run at both the 2019 and 2025 US Open being the deepest. Her son Adyn, or ‘AJ,’ had arrived specially for her match against Krejčíková and was cheering his mother.

A Fan in the Stadium Distracted the Online Tennis Community
The home crowd in New York was cheering for Townsend during the match. The atmosphere was electric whenever she scored a winner, with everybody on their feet to cheer the local. However, there was one single fan in Louis Armstrong Stadium who had Krejčíková’s back in the entire match.
During the entire match, he supported her despite the 14,000 people around him cheering for Townsend. The online tennis community had mixed reactions to X, with many fans criticizing him for his behaviour.
One fan wrote, “He deserves to be banned from the stadium. It was disrespectful to the game.” Everyone is entitled to their perspective, but the effort was undeniable.
He deserves to be banned from the stadium. He was so obnoxious and disruptive. I’m surprised no one went and talked to him. It was disrespectful to the game. https://t.co/uP1067lMow

A fan was happy to see him support Krejčíková in front of the foreign crowd. They wrote: “Loved him rooting for Barbora when a crowd wouldn’t support tennis, just only local players. Crowd didn’t cheer at all for Barbora so he had to reach her by being persistently loud.”

Krejčíková is in the US Open quarterfinals for the second time and is set to face last year’s finalist Jessica Pegula. The Czech leads the head-to-head battle against Pegula with a 2-1 record, winning the previous two clashes. Meanwhile, Townsend and Kateřina Siniaková are set to face Yue Yuan/Camila Osorio in the round of 16 match of the US Open women’s doubles.
