Taylor Townsend did not hold back after punching her ticket to the first WTA singles final of her career at the 2026 ATX Open. The American left-hander, competing as a wildcard in the WTA 250 event in Austin, Texas, used her on-court interview to send a direct message to those who doubted her path.
After years of hearing she was not enough of this or too much of that, Townsend made it clear she is still here and building her legacy on her own terms.
Taylor Townsend Delivers a Defiant Message to Critics While Celebrating Her First Singles Final
Long regarded as one of the most skillful players on tour, especially in doubles, her singles journey has been marked by resets, comebacks and public scrutiny. Since returning to the tour after the birth of her son, Adyn, she has steadily rebuilt her ranking and confidence. In Austin, she showcased her craft and endurance, advancing to at least the semifinals in both singles and doubles.
In the opening round in singles, she dropped the first set to Czech lucky loser Linda Fruhvirtova before clawing back for a 4-6, 7-6(3), 7-5 victory. She then dispatched Czech qualifier Nikola Bartunkova 6-1, 6-4 in the Round of 16.
The quarterfinal tested her again as she fell behind Swiss qualifier Rebeka Masarova by a set before turning the match around to win 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. In the semifinals, she edged fellow American Ashlyn Krueger 7-6(6), 6-3 to reach her first WTA singles final. After the customary handshake, she danced briefly before addressing the crowd.

During the on-court interview following that semifinal victory, the interviewer referenced the noise surrounding her career and the doors that had been shut in her face. Townsend embraced the moment. “Yeah, it’s been a journey,” she said. “I wouldn’t change it at all because all of those no’s were just delayed gratification for it.”
“Everyone that’s talked sh*t they gotta eat their words. I’m still standing, I’m still here, I’m not going anywhere. And it’s only just gonna keep getting better from here so I hope that they buckle up.”

She reflected on her return to the tour after becoming a mother. “Honestly, since having AJ and coming back, I’ve achieved history. I know people say I’m the first mom to achieve it in doubles, but there hasn’t been a singles player to reach number one either.”
She then delivered the line that echoed around the venue. “So I’m really proud to be able to hold that history. I’m creating a legacy for myself and doing it my way, like I said. And so honestly, everyone that talked sh*t, they’ve got to eat their words. I’m still standing. I’m still here. I’m not going anywhere. And it’s only going to keep getting better from here. So I hope they buckle up.”
Townsend will now face fourth seed Peyton Stearns in an all-American final, their first meeting on the WTA Tour. Her week in Austin has extended beyond singles. In doubles, she teamed with Australia’s Storm Hunter as the top seeds. They opened with a 6-2, 7-6(5) win over the American duo of Peyton Stearns and Venus Williams.
In the quarterfinals, they overwhelmed Oksana Selekhmeteva and Anastasia Zakharova 6-2, 6-0 in just 52 minutes to reach the semifinals, where they are set to meet fourth seeds Caty McNally and Kimberly Birrell.
