Taylor Fritz reflected on his performance after a surprising three-set loss to Jiří Lehečka in the fourth round of the Miami Open. Taylor Fritz credited his opponent for the win, acknowledging he deserved it, while admitting disappointment at not capitalizing on the opportunity after Carlos Alcaraz’s early exit had opened up the draw.
Taylor Fritz Reflects on His Miami Open Loss Amid ‘Great Opportunity’ After Carlos Alcaraz’s Exit
Lehečka made a strong start, taking the opening set 6-4 and seizing early control. Fritz then responded by raising his level in the second, edging a tight tie-break 7-6(4) to force a decider. However, Lehečka regained command in the final set, dominating proceedings to close out a 6-2 win and book his place in the quarterfinals of the Masters 1000 event.
With his two-hour, 20-minute win, Lehečka became the third player from his nation, after Petr Korda and Tomas Berdych, to reach the quarterfinals at both the Indian Wells Open and the Miami Open.
It is worth noting that the top half of the draw had opened up following Carlos Alcaraz’s shock third-round exit to Sebastian Korda. That development presented a significant opportunity for Fritz, who was set to avoid a potential quarterfinal clash with the Spaniard. However, his fourth-round defeat to Lehečka ultimately ended those hopes.
Fritz admitted that, though he didn’t do too much wrong, the loss was disappointing given the opportunity after the draw had opened up. However, he was quick to credit Jiří Lehečka, acknowledging that the Czech outplayed him and deserved to advance.
“There’s a couple things I could have done better, but I did well to take it to a third. He played great. I really didn’t do too much wrong. And you know, when that’s the way it is, I feel a lot less frustrated. It does suck because the draw obviously has opened, and it’s a great opportunity, but he played better than me. He deserved it,” he said after the match.

Lehečka reduced Taylor Fritz’s head-to-head lead to 4-2, marking his second consecutive win over the American. The Czech has also climbed four spots to No. 18 in the ATP Live Rankings following his impressive run in Miami. He will next face rising Spaniard Martín Landaluce, with PFSN’s simulator strongly backing Lehečka with an 84% chance of victory.
Meanwhile, Taylor Fritz’s wait for a title in the 2026 season continues, with the American holding a 12-8 win-loss record. Currently managing a knee issue, he had earlier indicated that he could skip the clay-court swing if his Miami campaign fell short to prioritize recovery. It now remains to be seen how he approaches the lead-up to the French Open.
