When Taylor Fritz stepped onto the Delray Beach Tennis Centre court, he carried more than just his country’s hopes. How Did Taylor Fritz Battle Through Illness to Keep Team USA’s Davis Cup Dreams Alive?

The American squad consists of Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, Reilly Opelka, Rajeev Ram, Austin Krajicek, and captain Bob Bryan. The matches are at the Delray Beach Tennis Centre in Delray Beach, Florida, during the second round of the 2025 Davis Cup qualifiers, which began on September 12, 2025, and run until September 14, 2025. The winner of this tie will advance to the Final 8, which will be played in Bologna.

Earlier this year, Team USA defeated Chinese Taipei 4-0 in the first round of the 2025 Davis Cup qualifiers, setting up this crucial second-round showdown with the Czech Republic.

The day started poorly for the Americans when Tiafoe faced Jiří Lehečka in the opening singles match and lost 6-3, 6-2. That put pressure squarely on Fritz’s shoulders in the second singles match, where he responded by defeating Menšík 6-4, 6-3 to even the score at 1-1.

What Symptoms Was Taylor Fritz Fighting During the Davis Cup Qualifiers?

Following his crucial win over Menšík, Fritz revealed the extent of his illness during the post-match press conference. The former world No. 4 disclosed that he had been dealing with a sickness that left him completely drained during practice sessions leading up to the tournament.

“I’m sick. Like, I felt like two of the practices I had in the days leading up kind of didn’t feel right. I felt like I was getting so, just exhausted for no reason. I kind of felt like maybe some sickness was coming on,” Fritz explained.

The illness hit Fritz hardest two nights before his match against Menšík. After finishing a practice session with Tiafoe, Fritz experienced the full brunt of his symptoms during the drive home.

“Two nights ago, I finished a practice with Frances and I was driving home, and I just started feeling, like, just so, so sick. I was up all night just, like, coughing, sore throat, all that normal stuff,” he continued.

The symptoms included persistent coughing and a sore throat that kept Fritz awake throughout the night. Despite feeling at his worst the day before the match, Fritz managed to recover enough to compete at the level Team USA needed.

Fritz described the day before his match as the peak of his illness, when he felt his absolute worst. However, by match day, he had improved enough to take the court and deliver the performance his team desperately needed.

“I woke up yesterday morning just, I felt so bad. It was just like yesterday was kind of like that peak day of the sickness where it’s, like, the worst. I still don’t feel great, but today, where I was at yesterday, like, I’m a lot better today, for sure,” Fritz added.

Before representing Team USA at the 2025 Davis Cup qualifiers second round, Fritz competed at the US Open, reaching the quarterfinals before losing to Novak Djokovic. This Davis Cup appearance marks his first competition since that quarterfinal defeat in New York.
