Coco Gauff became the recipient of some criticism after speaking openly about what it feels like to play abroad without strong American fan support, as some fans misinterpreted her words. The World No. 4 recently took to social media to provide more context for her statement and calm the reaction.
Taylor Fritz Defends Coco Gauff’s Remarks About American Fans
Gauff’s remarks came during a press conference for the United Cup in Perth, when she was asked whether she expected strong support from American fans while playing across Australia. In her response, the American star admitted that compared to players from smaller countries, Americans tend to show up less consistently at tennis events overseas.
“I feel like we’re definitely, in tennis, the worst. I’ve always said I wish our country in other places would show up throughout the world as we see smaller countries support,” she said.
Her comments sparked an online debate, and some fans took them as a dig at Americans who don’t travel overseas to watch tournaments. As the discussion started heating up, Gauff made a post on X clarifying her words.
Gauff said she wasn’t criticizing fans who don’t travel to tournaments. Instead, she was talking about fans who are already in the stands and how fans from smaller countries often show more visible support with their national flags, etc.

She stressed it was just her own perspective and said she understands the financial constraints of watching tennis abroad, and also made it clear that she feels grateful “for any support, no matter how big or small it is.”
Responding to her clarification post, fellow American colleague Taylor Fritz also wrote a post on X supporting Gauff’s comments. “People always wanna take things in the worst possible way. I was there sitting next to her, and I know EXACTLY what Coco meant and was trying to say, and she’s right,” he wrote.

“There is absolutely no disrespect meant to the US fans at all in this statement. If we were to play Czech or Poland here at United Cup there will be a massive group of fans going crazy for them. We love the Americans that come out and support, some other countries abroad just have a really insane sports culture, but we appreciate every single American abroad that comes to watch,” Fritz wrote, adding more to Gauff’s clarification.
Defending champion USA’s United Cup had some hurdles on the way, but the team is through to the knockout stage. They opened with a win over Argentina thanks to Coco Gauff’s singles and mixed doubles victories, despite Taylor Fritz losing his opening match.
The USA then suffered a setback after Gauff faced a shocking loss to Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. However, Fritz kept the hopes alive by saving a match point to beat Jaume Munar.
Gauff then secured the top spot in Group A with a strong mixed doubles win alongside Christian Harrison, eliminating Spain from the tournament.
