Stefanos Tsitsipas arrived at the 2026 US Open unseeded but pulled off a major upset against No. 10 seed Arthur Fils at Louis Armstrong Stadium. After losing the opening set, Tsitsipas fought back to win 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-1, 6-4, with his family, girlfriend Kristen Thoms, and new coach Patrick Mouratoglou among those showing their support online.

The Frenchman entered New York on a six-match winning streak after winning his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati just eight days earlier. He took the opening set and led 4-1 in the second, but Tsitsipas fought back. The Greek, who recently ended a 16-month title drought in Gstaad, hit 50 winners to Fils’ 38 to complete the comeback and advance to the second round.
Mouratoglou, who recently joined Tsitsipas’ coaching team alongside Thomas Perrin, was quick to celebrate the Greek’s win online. He shared a photo of Tsitsipas celebrating on Instagram, writing, “It always starts with the heart and you put all of it today. You can be proud of yourself @stefanostsitsipas98.”
The French coach also praised Fils for his recent run, adding, “Bad luck today @arthur.fils but congratulations for an incredible summer.” He later commented “GR 💪🏼” on the post, applauding Tsitsipas’ fighting spirit.

The Tsitsipas family also celebrated Stefanos’ victory online. He has two younger brothers, Petros and Pavlos Tsitsipas, who are also professional tennis players, and a sister, Elisavet Tsitsipa. Petros, who has partnered with Stefanos in doubles, commented on the US Open’s Instagram post, “Opinions are loud. Results are louder @stefanostsitsipas98 show em.” Elisavet showed her support under Mouratoglou’s post, writing, “insanely proud❤️♾️.”
The former World No. 3 also took to Instagram to celebrate the win, sharing photos from the match with the caption, “Stand a little less between me and the sun 🏛️.” His sister Elisavet added another sweet message: “sista is proud💖”.
Tsitsipas’ girlfriend, Kristen Thoms, was there to cheer him on. She commented “❤️ 🦁” on his Instagram post and shared a story from the players’ box as she watched him prepare on court, using the same emojis to celebrate his win.

Tsitsipas reached two Grand Slam finals and a career-high No. 3 ranking while working with his father, Apostolos Tsitsipas. There have been multiple on-court heated moments between the two as well. They split in 2024 before reuniting last year, but Tsitsipas later brought in Mouratoglou, a former coach of Serena Williams, as part of his coaching setup.
After beating Fils, the 28-year-old explained why he felt a change was necessary. “I personally felt like I needed it. I needed a different voice. I needed someone who provides a little bit more calm into my tennis world,” he said. “There was a lot of chaos surrounding me before and a lot of noise. It took, for me, a long time to figure it out and realize that I just can’t cope with it anymore. I also felt I grew up.”
Next up, Tsitsipas will face qualifier Lloyd Harris in the second round.
