Sloane Stephens Slams Hater With Curt Response After Being Trolled for Quick Indian Wells Exit

Sloane Stephens issued a brief reply to online criticism after her early Indian Wells exit, drawing attention on social media.

Sloane Stephens did not need a long explanation to respond to criticism following her early exit at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. After a social media user mocked the former US Open champion for her early exit, Stephens delivered a sharp and curt reply.

The American tennis star, who has been navigating a difficult stretch both on and off the court, responded to the jab by simply addressing the commenter by name, expressing her unwillingness to entertain the criticism.

Sloane Stephens Shuts Down Critic With Brief Reply on Social Media

Stephens, who accepted a wildcard into the BNP Paribas Open, fell 4-6, 1-6 to Camila Osorio in the singles opening round. Following that defeat, a social media user attempted to take a dig at Stephens’ performance. Posting on Threads after the match, the user wrote, “Alright Sloane. If you didn’t want to play just say that.”

Stephens noticed the remark and responded directly. Instead of engaging in a lengthy exchange, she delivered a pointed reply, addressing the commenter by name: “Alright Lille.”

Stephens’ first-round loss in Indian Wells came during a complicated phase of her career. The 2017 US Open champion has been working her way back after injuries disrupted much of her 2025 season. Her struggles began after a second-round exit at Wimbledon in 2024, which was followed by a 13-match losing streak as she battled a lingering right ankle injury.

The issue forced her to miss multiple events and halted her tour momentum. Despite being sidelined, Stephens remained active in the sport by joining ESPN and TNT broadcasts as an analyst, providing commentary while continuing her recovery.

What Challenges Has Stephens Faced During Her Recent Comeback?

Her return to competition has been gradual. The 2026 season began with a first-round loss to Renata Zarazua at the ASB Classic in Auckland.

Ranked outside the top 1000 at the time, Stephens was unable to enter the Australian Open main draw directly and instead had to qualify. She managed to earn a spot in the main draw, where her run ended with a 7-6(7), 6-2 defeat to Karolina Pliskova.

Off the court, Stephens has also been navigating a personal transition after revealing on Instagram Stories last month that she and former United States men’s national team striker Jozy Altidore had decided to end their marriage. The announcement of their separation came less than two months after their fourth wedding anniversary.

Shortly after confirming the split, Stephens also withdrew from the Mérida Open in Mexico, citing personal reasons. The American is also competing in the doubles draw at Indian Wells. She has teamed up with Donna Vekić, and the duo is set to face the fifth-seeded pair of Anna Danilina and Aleksandra Krunić in the opening round.
