Serena Williams’ former coach, Rick Macci, recently pointed out the reasons behind Jannik Sinner’s dominance on the ATP leaderboards. Notably, the former world No. 1 is leading the ATP Tour in both service games won and return games won, among other statistics.
Sinner concluded his 2025 season by competing in the ATP Finals, where he triumphed over Félix Auger-Aliassime, Alexander Zverev, Ben Shelton, and Alex de Minaur to secure a spot in the final. There, he defeated Carlos Alcaraz, defending his title and claiming his 24th ATP Tour title overall.
Jannik Sinner Leading ATP Leaderboards Draws Reaction From Rick Macci
After the 2025 season ended, it was reported that Sinner topped the charts in service games won and return games won. It is interesting to note that this marks the first time since 1991, when the ATP began tracking these statistics, that a player has led in both categories in the same season.
The four-time Grand Slam champion achieved a remarkable 92% success rate in service games and won 32.6% of return games, also earning the highest rating for performing brilliantly under pressure. He also leads the ATP charts in performance rating, steals, conversions, and shot quality.
Reacting to Sinner’s accomplishment of leading all ATP leaderboard charts, Macci took to social media and shared his thoughts. He mentioned that the “real reason” the Italian boasts the best serve among his peers is his backup plan, which includes “explosive” forehand and backhand strokes.
“Sinner holds serve more than anybody and because he holds serve many think it is his serve. Serve is better but the Italian backup plan featuring an explosive forehand backhand wheels and mindset is the REAL REASON he holds serve better than any human with a stick. @janniksin,” Macci posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).

This year, Sinner finished with six titles, including two Grand Slam titles. He began the season by defending his title at the 2025 Australian Open, defeating Zverev in the final. He secured his second Major title at Wimbledon by overcoming Alcaraz in the final.
The former world No. 1 then claimed the 2025 China Open title by defeating Learner Tien. Sinner then went on to win three consecutive titles: the Vienna Open, the Paris Masters, and the ATP Finals, defeating Zverev, Auger-Aliassime, and Alcaraz in the finals, respectively. He also finished as the runner-up at the Italian Open, French Open, Cincinnati Open, and the US Open.
